Score OF PHARMACOGNOSY
Pharmacognosy is important not only as an academic exercise. It is the infrastructure on
which evolution of novel medicines depends. Several crude drugs are utilised for the
preparation of galanicals. Several crude drugs provide essential intermediate for final
synthesis of bioactive molecule. Eighty Percent of world population depends on crude
drug and folklore medicine. All over the world, the demand of herbal drug increased
enormously. Pharmacognosy has a wide and broad scope in the field of pharmacy and
it's allied branches. Some of them are very important which are described below,
1, Cultivation and domestication of Medicinal plants : India imports many drugs
such as Benzoin, Storax, Ipomoea, Tolu Balsum, Copaiba,, etc. If the cultivation of
these drugs producing plants are carried out and cultivated in India, a lot of foreign
exchange can be saved which will be helpful in the development of the country,
Cultivation and domestication of some important plant are also essential to fulfill the
demand of phytochemical industries e.g. Mentha piperata Linn., Santalum album
Plantago ovata, Ocimum sanctum, etc.
2. Analysis of Phytochemicals : Many bio-active molecule are extracted and isolated
from the crude drugs. These are analysed by modem technique such as paper, thin
layer, gas and high performance liquid chromatography.
3. Preparation of General Tonics an’ Stimulants : Despite the many advances
made in the field of modern medicine 1 2re are a number of diseases for which these
medicine has no cure. These medicine provide only symptomatic relief to patients.
Liver disorders, arthritis, cancer, AIDS are some of them. Some of Ayurvedic
formulations based on crude drugs are very effective in liver diseases and disorder
e.g. Liv-52, Livomin, Livergen, etc. Ginseng, Tulsi, Ashwagandha, Shatavari,
Brahmi, etc. are used as stimulants and adaptogenic drugs.
4. In steroid industry : Many pharmaceutical industries are involved in the extraction
of diosgenin from Dioscorea species. It is an important precursor for production of
steroidal drugs such as sex hormones, contraceptives, corticosteroids.
5. Herbal preparation : Recently herbal preparations are popularized due to their
high effectiveness, low cost, easy availability and less side effects. Adhatoda vasica4 Textbook of Pharmacognosy

ee (Kalmegh), -Antihepatotoxic Anabolic, Bacopo monnieri (Brahmi)
Memory,, etc. are used as herbal medicines.
Preparation of antibiotics : Antibiotics are prepared from natural sources. These
e health of people through out the world. A large
are very useful in maintaining the
number of synthetic medicinal compounds are traced back through naturally
occurring substances.

7, Flavouring agents and perfumes : There are large number of aromatic plants
which are extensively used as flavouring agents perfumes spices and medicines. India
produces a large number of essential oils. e.g. Ajowain, Citronella, Eucalyptus,
Mentha, Palmrosa, Lemon grass, Turpentine, etc. Mentha oil is used in the
production of menthol. Lemon grass oil is used in the preparation of vitamin A.
Central Institute of Medicinal and ‘Aromatic Plant (CIMAP) Lucknow is doing
significant work in this field.
8 Tissue culture : This technique is now a days widely applicable for the production
J of secondary metabolites. People are using this technique to increase the yield of bio-
active molecules. Due to a great demand of herbal medicines scope of
pharmacognosy is increasing day by day, but there is need of standardization of
herbal medicine. Although it is very difficult because various exogenous and.
endogenous factors are involved in the production of crude drug but standardizati
is very essential to maintain the quality of herbal medicine.
