DME (Design of Machine Elements-305) : Assignment No-4

This document outlines four questions for a machine elements assignment involving the selection of materials and calculation of factors of safety. Question 1 involves designing a rod for a ceiling fan. Question 2 involves designing a socket and spigot cotter joint to connect two rods under an axial load of 80kN, selecting materials and a factor of safety while calculating stresses and dimensions. Question 3 involves designing a knuckle joint to connect two circular rods under a tensile force of 70kN. Question 4 involves designing longitudinal and circumferential joints for a boiler shell with specified dimensions and pressure to achieve given joint efficiencies.

DME (Design of Machine Elements-305)

Assignment No-4
(Selection of Material and Factor of Safety)

Q.1 Design a rod for ceiling fan.

Q.2 Design of socket and spigot cotter joint to bear an axial load of 80 KN for joining two rods.

a) Select suitable material for rod and cotter.

b) Select a FOS neglecting shocks and stress concentration due to action.

c) Calculate safe tensile, shear and compressive stresses.

d) Calculate main dimensions and check for various failures.

Q.3 Design a knuckle joint to connect two circular roads with an co-axial tensile force of 70 KN.

Q.4 Design a longitudinal & circumferential joint for a boiler shall of inside diameter 1.6 m and
internal pressure 1.7 MPa, such that the joint efficiencies for the longitudinal and circumferential
joints are more than 70% and 60% respectively. Strength in shear, tension and compression are
320 MPa, 450 MPa and 580 MPa respectively.
