CE 415: Design of Steel Structures

This document discusses guidelines for welds in steel structures. It states that if the plate thickness is less than 1/4 inches, the maximum weld thickness should equal the plate thickness, but if the plate thickness is 1/4 inches or greater, the maximum weld thickness should be the plate thickness minus 1/16 inches, with a minimum weld thickness of 1/4 inches. It also notes that the effective throat size of a fillet weld equals 0.707 times the size of the weld.
