Guided Lecture Notes, Chapter 1, Health Care Delivery and

Evidence-Based Nursing Practice

Learning Objective 1. Define nursing, health, wellness, and health
promotion.
Begin the introduction with a brief definition of nursing. (Refer to
PowerPoint slide 2.)
 Bring into the definition the philosophy of nursing or the nursing
organization framework of your institution or program of nursing.
 Have students compare their personal philosophy of nursing with the
one of your nursing program.
 Explore the Web site for Healthy People 2020. Identify five items that
will impact the wellness of our society. (Refer to PowerPoint slide 3.)
 Define health and wellness. Students frequently want a specific
definition and need to realize that definitions are changing and are
culturally based. The definitions of health and wellness will affect the
responses, goals, and expectations of the patient. Health and wellness
are not absolutes, but are best viewed on a continuum. (Refer to
PowerPoint slides 4 and 5.)

Learning Objective 2. Describe how changes in population demographics,

changes in patterns of disease and wellness, and advances in technology and

genetics have influenced the health care delivery system.

 Discuss factors affecting health care delivery. These factors include

changes in demographics, increased aging population, cultural
diversity, changes in disease patterns, increased use of technology,
economic changes, and more. Compare a historical perspective as to
the impact of each in today’s health care market. (Refer to
PowerPoint slides 6 to 9.)
 There is an increasing emphasis on health promotion, and health care
professionals, including nurses, must perform an increasing role in
motivating people to adopt behaviors to improve their health. How can
a nurse’s personal health/wellness choices impact the ability to
motivate others? (Refer to PowerPoint slides 11 and 12.)
 Briefly explain quality care and safety. Explain the effect of quality
improvement on health care. Include discussion of the requirements
for/quality improvement methods, such as the National Patient Safety
Goals, evidence-based practice, Core Measures and patient surveys.
(Refer to PowerPoint slides 13 and 14.)
Learning Objective 3. Discuss recent laws, provisions, and practices that

improve quality and safety and ensure the use of evidence-based practices

within the health care system.

 Impress that the use of research and evidence-based practice is an

obligation of the nurse to improve health care provision, even though
the nurse is not a formal researcher. Students often do not perceive
that research has an application in their everyday performance of care.
Demonstrate ways in which EBP can change and improve patient
outcomes with the use of case studies. (Refer to PowerPoint slide
15.)
 Discuss integration of QSEN competencies in nursing education. (Refer
to Power Point slide 17.)
 Discuss the nurse’s role in seamless transition, including case
management and as a clinical nurse leader. (Refer to PowerPoint
slide 18.)
 Explain the role of the case manager and clinical nurse leader. Identify
how the role differs for those professional nurses who work in
institutional, community-oriented, or community-based settings.
Although each role carries specific responsibilities, these roles are
characteristic of all nursing positions, relate to one another, and are
designed to meet the immediate and future needs of consumers who
are the recipients of nursing care. Often, nurses act in a combination
of roles to provide comprehensive patient care.

Learning Objective 4. Discuss behavioral competencies and characteristics

of professional nursing practice.
 Outline the nurse’s responsibility to the profession according to the
American Nurses Association, the Nurse Practice Act, and the Code of
Ethics for Nurses. Encourage students to compare and contrast the
similarities and differences between each responsibility. (Refer to
PowerPoint slide 19.)
 Discuss the importance of meeting a patient’s basic needs according to
Maslow’s hierarchy. Have each student take on the role of one of the
needs and debate why one would be a higher priority than the other.
(Refer to PowerPoint slide 22, Figure 1-1.)

Learning Objective 5. Describe models that foster interdisciplinary

collaborative practice and promote safety and quality outcomes in the

practice of health care.

Discuss the expanded roles of the nurse, including advance practice nurses.
Mention some requirements related to state regulations and describe some
roles in advanced practice pertinent to your locality. (Refer to PowerPoint
slides 23 and 24.)
