Listening practice Unit 3

Blood is thicker than water

1 Read the words and the definitions. Make sure you understand them before listening.

stepparents: the man or woman who is married to someone’s mother or father but who is not their real father or mother
split up: if two people split up, they end their relationship or marriage
interracial relationship: a relationship between people of different races

2 Read the first paragraph of the listening. What do you think it will be about?

What is a family? The definition of the word family has changed a lot over the last 30 years or so. Gone are the days when it was
assumed that a family meant a married couple with any number of children of their own. Now, families can be made up of one or
two parents or stepparents and any combination of children, stepchildren or adopted children. This is clearly demonstrated by the
different TV series that have existed over the last three decades.
