First Semester, AY 2020-2021

Prepared by : Dr. Elvis P. Patulin

Date of examination : Oct 30, 2020, Friday, 8:00AM to 5:00PM
Mode of administration : Online via Google Classroom

Instructions:
 Accomplish all three tasks from 8:000AM to 5:00PM, merge all your answers and
outputs in one single PDF file, and submit it within the day only (on or before 11:59PM
today) in Google Classroom. After submitting your PDF file in the Google Classroom,
you need to submit the same file in my Telegram account.
 Read everything first. For every task, there are many subtasks that will require your
answers, but only the main output will be graded. Each main output will be evaluated
using this rubric:
Criterion Weight Description
Richness of information 40% The ideas are complete and comprehensive;
keys ideas are not missed
Accuracy/correctness 50% The ideas are founded on the theories and
concepts; narratives are based on the topics
Creativity and/or neatness 10% The presentation of ideas is original and easy to
read
 Note that this does not mean that you will only submit the main outputs; you still have to
include your answers/responses for each subtask to support your main outputs.
 Feel free to open your notes and the Educ 8 Learning Modules to guide you.
 No duplication of big outputs; be original! Any form of academic dishonesty will
invalidate all your outputs for this Midterm Exam.

Task 1: “Bronfenbrennize” yourself (50pts)

Module 1 of Educ 8 made you learn about Bronfenbrenner’s theory of ecological development,
where its main tenet is that an individual child develops and grows within “layers” of social
influences. These layers of social influences are microsystem, mesosystem, macrosystem,
exosystem, and chronosystem. Now, you are tasked to apply your new and/or enhanced
understanding of this theory by looking into your own ecology, examining your own social
world. Do the following:
1. Reflect on your current state of personal/academic development. What are your most
significant achievements so far, as well as your most unforgettable experiences of
failure? Write your thoughts down in a narrative form, not in bullets nor in outline form.
2. Now, reflect on the “ecological factors” that have contributed to your current state of
personal/academic development. Describe how your parents, friends, and teachers
affected you into becoming what you are now, including all mentors and advisors you
met, the schools you attended, the mass media and TV shows you loved to watch, the

religious and cultural traditions that you valued (and still value), and other social-
ecological factors.
3. Finally, illustrate your answers (use keywords from your responses in #1 and 2) using
(the same circles by Bronfenbrenner). This is the main output: 50pts
4. Note: You can use your pen and paper here. Be sure your handwriting is good enough for
me to read and understand your writings and illustrations. When you are finished, take
clear pictures of your outputs and prepare them for merging later into one file together
with Task 2 and 3 outputs.

Task 2: How are children socialized in school? (50pts)

In our first meeting, this question was posed: “How are children socialized in school?” Now that
you have already been exposed to Modules 1 to 3 where you learned about the ecology of
children, the ecology of socialization, and the ecology of schools, you are hereby tasked to
demonstrate your new and/or enhanced understanding by doing the following:
1. Describe two aims of socialization by/in schools (target of socialization: children).
2. Describe three key agents of socializations in schools that target children/students.
3. Describe two methods of socializations that occur in schools targeting children/students.
4. Describe three student/child outcomes of socialization by/in schools.
5. Illustrate all your responses in #1-4 into a unique graphical organizer. Be creative on this
one. Do not use a table to summarize your responses; use something else, like a flower, a
tree, a spider web, a Venn diagram, or whatever organizer that can allow you to best
showcase your ideas. This is the main output: 50pts

Task 3: The current state of the ecology of schools in the Philippines (40pts)
Module 3 of Educ 8 made you learn about the social forces that influence schools and how such
forces can affect schooling and development of children. This time, you are tasked to read,
understand, and analyze three news articles that describe the current status of the ecology of
schools in the Philippines. Complete the table below (This is the main output: 50pts):
The core What are main opinions of Using your knowledge gained in
issues/problems that are various people about the core Educ 8 so far, and as a future
described in the three issues/problems? teacher, how are you going to
news articles address these issues/problems?
