Mabuhay, Pilipinas! Ako ay si Hailey.

Welcome, Philippines! I am Hailey.
And welcome back to my channel “Filipino in a Flash”.
Filipino sa Isang Iglap.

Ang pinakamabilis, pinakamadali, at pinakasimpleng paraan para matuto ng Filipino.

Halika! Aral tayo.

Introduction

In light of the pandemic, we will be learning common phrases used in the Philippines when we
want to encourage or help our fellowmen.
Ang mga madalas na sinasabi kapag gusto nating ipasaya o tulungan ang ating mga kapwa tao.

Are you ready? Let’s go!

Handa ka na ba? Tara!

Transition

First, we will learn how to ask someone about their day.

Kumusta ang araw mo?

Ku-mus-ta
Ang
Araw
Mo
Kumusta ang araw mo?

In English, this means

How was your day?

Kumusta literally means how are you, while Araw means day. Ang is used as a topic marker. In
Filipino, the words mo and ikaw means you.

We can also say,

Kumusta ka?

In response to the question, we say

Mabuti ako.
Ma-bu-ti
Ako
Mabuti ako.

In English, this means

“I am good”.

We can also add the sentence,

Salamat sa pagtatanong.
Sa-la-mat
Sa
Pag-ta-ta-nong
Salamat sa pagtatanong.
Or Thank you for asking.

So, when someone asks Kumusta ka? We can say

Mabuti ako. Salamat sa pagtatanong.

If someone’s day hasn’t been going well, we can say

Kapit lang. or Hang in there.
Naniniwala ako sa iyo! Or I believe in you!
Nandito ako para sa iyo. Or I am here for you.

Say it with me!

Ka-pit
Lang

In English, Kapit means “hold on”.

Na-ni-ni-wa-la
Ako
Sa
Iyo

Naniniwala is to believe.

Nan-di-to
Ako
Para
Sa
Iyo
Nandito means “here”, and in this context, para is a benefactive marker that means “for”.

We can also help each other by sharing words of kindness and reminders.

“Keep safe.” In Filipino is

Mag-ingat
Ka

Ingat means “careful”. Mag is a prefix that verbalizes nouns into imperatives. So Magingat
means “Be careful.”

“Wear your face mask.”

Isuot
Ang
I-yong
Face mask

“You need to stay at home.” In Filipino is

Kai-langan
Mong
Ma-na-tili
Sa
Bahay

Isuot literally means “to wear”. Iyo with the connector “ng” becomes the possessive pronoun
“your”.

Kailangan translates to “need or must”, manatili means “stay”, and bahay is “home”.

When you miss someone, you can say

Miss na miss na kita.

Review
Let’s review. Today, we learned the following words
Kumusta ang araw mo? O r Kumusta ka?

Kapit lang
Naniniwala ako sa iyo!
Nandito ako para sa iyo.
As reminders, we can say
Magingat ka.
Isuot ang iyong face mask.
Kailangan mong manatili sa bahay.
