Thesis Statement
Presents or describes the point of an essay. In an academic text, the
thesis statement is usually presented in abstract or executive
summary or found at the last part of the introduction (Barrot &
Sipacio, 2016). It is written in a declarative sentence. (Refer to the
sample above as example)
Expresses the main idea and organizes the entire research report
(Senn & Skinner, 2001).
A thesis statement is a claim that could be argued.
It is a statement that summarizes your topic and declares your
position on it.
Tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject
matter under discussion.
It is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what
to expect from the rest of the paper.
It is the central idea of a multiple-paragraph composition. It is one
sentence summary that guides, controls and unifies ideas when
writing a paper. In simple terms, all the other ideas present in an easy
revolve around the thesis statement.
It focuses your ideas into one or two sentences. It should present the
topic of your paper and also make a comment about your position in
relation to the topic. Your thesis statement should tell your reader
what the paper is about and also help guide your writing and keep
your argument focused.
Sample Introduction
Filipinos are frequent moviegoers. Perhaps because of the comic relief
that comedy films promise, or the fairy tale ending we all want to have that
the rom-coms provide, we indulge in the cinematography of moving pictures.
In the 1984 Guinness Book of World Records, the Philippines was listed as
the nation with the world’s most avid film-going public, averaging 19 trips to
the been known to have the highest level of theatre admission in South-East
Asia, with 63 million moviegoers in 2004 (Phil. Indie films”). More often than
not, movie theatres all over the Metro are filled with people who want to
break out from their usual working routine to catch a two-hour movie with
friends. Oddly enough, however, we as constant consumers of these motion
pictures tend to patronize those that are made particularly international.

Note: The underlined sentence is the thesis statement
In some cases, in academic texts, the thesis statement located at the last part of the
introduction is replaced with a purpose statement. Unlike the thesis statement, the
purpose statement is introduced by signal phrases that announce the purpose, scope,
or direction of the text as well as its focus. These signal phrases include:
“This study examined…..”
“This paper examines……”
“The aim of this essay is to ……”
“This paper begins with……”
“In this paper, I hope to ……”
“The primary objective of this paper is to ……”

Assessment
1. Maya Angelou is an accomplished African- American author in the United States. While
growing up, she suffered tremendous hardship. Some of her most difficult life events are
portrayed in novels and poems such as I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and Still I Rise.
Her written works are often including strong themes such as perseverance through trials,
love for family, and passionate optimism.
2. Psychologists have argued for decades about how a person’s character is formed.
Numerous psychologists believe that one’s birth order (i.e. Place in the family as the
youngest, oldest, or middle child) has the greatest influence. I believe birth order can have a
significant impact in the formation of a child’s character based on my own experience growing
up in a family of four children. Birth order can strongly affect one’s relationship with parents,
relationships with others, and how one views responsibility as an adult.
3. What was happened to the American male? For a long he seemed utterly confident in his
manhood, sure of his masculine role in society, easy and definite in his sense of sexual
identity. The frontiersmen of James Fenimore Cooper, for example, never had any concern
about masculinity; they were men, and it did not occur to them to think twice about it. Even
well into the twentieth century, the heroes of Dreiser, of Fitzgerald, of Hemingway remain
men. But one begins to detect a new theme emerging in some of these authors, especially in
Hemingway: the theme of the male hero increasingly preoccupied with proving his virility to
himself. And by mid-century, the male role had plainly lost its rugged clarity of outline.
Today men are more and more conscious not as a fact but as a problem. The ways by which
American men affirm their masculinity are uncertain and obscure. There are multiplying
signs, indeed, that something has gone badly wrong with the American male’s conception of
himself.

5. Revise this thesis statement to make the claim more precise.

B. Read the texts below. Locate the thesis statement and identify the strategy
used.
A. Fidelity Investments is regarded as the leader in the financial services
industry. They have managed to do this by remaining one of the most
technologically advanced companies around as well as being extremely
innovative. Fidelity investments deals in outsourcing, which means Fidelity
manages other companies’ payroll, retirement plans, benefits etc. so that the
other companies do not need to form an independent department to handle
these issues. When a larger company wishes to have Fidelity managed these
issues it is handled by the Large Plan Services segment. This presentation
examines the current problems that occur from the way information is
currently distributed amongst the segment’s Project managers and cliental.
It will offer answers to the problems that currently slow the flow of
information throughout the segment and help make the system more
efficient.
B. The author Aldous Huxley once said,” To his dog, every man is Napoleon;
hence the constant popularity of dogs.” As I consider the pet I would to have
shared my life, its Huxley’s quote that sums up why a dog would be the best
choice. Because of its sense of loyalty, its ability to protect you and its great
companionship, a dog is the perfect pet.
C. Corporations and business companies need to focus on being competitive,
profitable and sustainable in order to survive in the future, Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) is a significant focus for companies, which is the
commitment to behave ethically and contribute to economic development
while improving the quality life of the community. It has been argued that
CSR is not an important consideration for 2018, which is possibly true for
smaller companies. However, it is vitally important to implement CSR in
larger corporations because it can improve reputation, investment and
profitability. This essay will discuss both areas of the argument and
conclude that CSR is important and should be a key focus for business.
