What is one possible career field that you are interested in? Why does this career field appeal
to you?
I am interested in being a Labor and Delivery registered Nurse. This career appeals to me
because I saw my friends’ delivery of her son and I wanted to do this ever since. I felt happy to
be there with her and help her through the delivery process and to make her feel comfortable.
She told me that I made her feel comfortable and she had a good experience with me being
there. She had a previous delivery before of her first child and she didn’t have a good
experience with the people that were in the room and with nurses. I strive to make women feel
comfortable and have a great experience when they are delivering their children.

Describe the working environment, job duties, and responsibilities of this career field?
The environment of this career would be in a hospital or clinic. Labor and Delivery nurses work
in many units of the hospital they can work with pregnant patients and non-pregnant patients.
The job duties and responsibilities of this career are that they assess patients in triage for
preterm labor, active labor, rupture of waters and pregnancy complications. Nurses also
monitor the fetus, manage the patients in labor, assist in inducing, epidural assistance, delivery
support, assist in an operating room during cesarean sections, administer medications,
newborn care and assessment, and give support during breastfeeding and postpartum labor.
How does this career field align with your personal values?

My values go with nursing I believe in helping everyone and I love to talk to people and to be
kind to people.
What is a major that UNO offers that would potentially lead to a job in this field?
I am in pre-nursing right now. UNO offers pre-nursing general classes.
What are some activities, organizations, volunteer opportunities, etc. that you could actively
pursue that would help prepare you for a career in this field?
I can volunteer at a local hospital and gain experience with a Registered Nurse.
What are some local employers that would hire for this career field?

CHI hospital, Nebraska Methodist hospital, and Bergan Mercy.


Does this career field align with your Strengths? Why or why not?
I believe my strengths does align with my career field. My strengths are woo, communication,
achiever, positivity and focus. In Nursing I need to be able to communicate with the patients
and staff, I need to focus on everything that I will be doing, and I am a positive person which
would help the patients feel better.
What are your next steps to continue to explore and learn more about this (or other) career
fields? What campus resources and people can help you in your career exploration process?
My steps to learn about this career field is to continue my education and to shadow or be an
intern at one of the hospitals to gain experience. I also need to get my CNA license so I will be
doing this as well. The people that can help me in my career exploration is the lady that I had
spoken to from the UNMC college that I will be attending for nursing. I also have academic
advisors or teachers that would help me. The health and kinesiology building would be able to
help as well.
