Weight and Volume Relationships

1. The soil core sample had a wet mass of 1000g and dry mass of 900g. 2. The moisture content was 10% or 100g of water. 3. The void ratio was 0.111 and porosity was 10%. 4. The degree of saturation was 50%. 5. The dry unit weight was 16.67 kN/m3.

WEIGHT-VOLUME RELATIONSHIPS
Outline of this Lecture

1.Density, Unit weight, and Specific gravity (Gs)

2.Phases in soil (a porousmedium)

3.Three phase diagram

4.Weight-volume relationships
Unit weight: γ= ρg
Unit weight is the product of density and gravity acceleration. It is the gravitational
force caused by the mass of material within a unit volume (density) in the unit of
Newtons per cubic meter in SI system.
Specific Gravity (Gs)

Specific gravity is defined as the ratio of unit weight (or density)

of a given material to the unit weight (or density) of water since
THREE PHASES OF SOILS

Naturally occurred soils always consist of solid particles, water,

and air, so that soil has three phases: solid, liquid and gas.

EXAMPLE

Determine moisture content, void ratio, porosityand degree of saturationof

a soil core sample. Also determine the dry unit weight, γd
