large Hydropower Projects in Pakistan.
Present Responsibilities:

Pakistan Water And Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is constructing many

Hydropower Projects in Pakistan. On most of the Projects especially in the Northern
Areas of Pakistan (which is seismically very active), VSAT telemetry based seismic
instrumentation has been carried out (Microseismic & Strong Motion). All the stations
are recorded at Central Recording Station (CRS) located at Tarbela Dam. At the CRS
seismic data is processed/analyzed through Antelope Software. Antelope is a system of
software modules that implement acquisition, transport, buffering, processing, archiving
and distribution of seismic monitoring informations. Both real-time automated data
processing and non real-time batch mode and interactive data processing are provided by
Antelope Software.

Job Description of Director Seismic Studies

i. Technical/Administrative head of the Seismic Studies Directorate which has

been recently established at Tarbela Dam Project for the seismic safety
monitoring of large Dams and Hydropower Structures, under planning or
construction by WAPDA in the seismically active Northern Areas of Pakistan. In
this connection WAPDA has planned to install 35 microseismic stations in the
Northern Areas. Under the supervision of Director Seismic Studies a network of
ten microseismic stations has been installed around the Diamer Basha Dam
Project (DBDP), while another ten microseismic stations are in the process of
installation at various locations of the Northern Areas, such as Dasu, Bunji,
Gilgit, Skardu, Pattan, Chitral and Muzaffarabad. Seismic data from all the
stations will be recorded through the VSAT system at Tarbela Dam Central
Recording Station (CRS). Here the seismic data will be processed and analyzed
through the latest state of art Antelope Software.

ii. Review seismic parameters for existing WAPDA Projects and propose evaluation
of seismic risk studies if required. Seismic Hazard analysis for large Dams and
Hydropower Projects.

iii. Analysis and Interpretation of Strong Motion Accelerographs (SMA) installed in

and around Tarbela Dam for safety monitoring purpose.

iv. Planning for the installation of Micro Seismic Monitoring Systems (MSMS)
around large Dams and Hydropower Projects in the seismically active regions of
Northern Areas.

v. Signal/Noise survey for the location of microseismic stations in the seismically

active Northern Areas of Pakistan.

vi. Establishment of microseismic stations around large Dams and Hydropower

Structures for safety monitoring purpose.
vii. Determination of subsurface velocity for accurate location of microseismic
events. Processing, analysis and interpretation of microseismic data through
latest state of art software.

viii. Review Periodic/Annual seismic inspection reports related to different WAPDA

Projects and implementation.

ix. Review of Seismic and Geophysical reports written by Consultants of large Dams
and Hydropower Projects.

x. Supervision of the liaison between WAPDA and Foreign Consultants related to

seismic studies in the Northern Areas of Pakistan.

xi. Implementation of Earthquake Drill during felt earthquakes for seismic safety of
Tarbela Dam Project.

xii. Meetings with Consultants for planning and survey to install seismic
instrumentations required for the seismic safety monitoring of WAPDA large
Dams and Hydropower Structures.
