Thesis Chapter 1

This chapter provides background information on the study. It discusses how the U.S. population of foreign-born immigrants increased in 2000 and how immigrant children attend American schools to receive English instruction. The purpose of the study is then stated as determining the academic benefits of learning a second language in Grade 6 students at Padada Central Elementary School. Three research questions and hypotheses are presented related to the academic, cognitive, and grade-related benefits of second language learning. The theoretical framework is also introduced as being based on the idea that second language learning provides active learning opportunities.

CHAPTER 1

Background of the study

In 2000, the U.S, population of foreign-born immigrants increased 11.1%, the

largest increase of this demographic since 1903 (Gibson & Jung. 200, as cited in
Gingerich, 2007). Immigrant children attend American schools were the children receive
English-language instruction to ensure continued academic success and progress. The
U.S educational system attempts to turn immigrant children into monolingual students
while at the same laments the absence of foreign language proficiency among its
students (Simon, 1980, as cited in Hakuta & Garcia, 1989). Recent efforts aim to
improve U.S students’ competencies. For example, the Michigan Merit Curriculum
requires all students beginning with the class of 2016 to earn two credits in a foreign
language program. The state will recognize equivalent experience in elementary school
as fulfilling the experiment. Such measures acknowledge that students who receive
instruction in foreign languages likely gain advantages over their non-FL-learning peers.
For instance, students with four or more years of foreign study second higher on the
verbal and mathematical portions of the Scholastic Achievement Test than did students
without four years of study (Marcos, 1998, as cited in Naserdeen, 2001). Economically,
certain job markets pay premiums to employees who speak foreign languages,
especially for minority languages (Saiz & Zoido. 2005).

The Philippines is a nation that is leading English proficiency in ASIA in general

Several English survey reports from both the academe (Tupas, 2000) and the business
world ( Global English Corporation, 2012), and the other aspects of life (Kirkpatrick,
2010) are pointing more and more to the importance that the English language and
English proficiency are playing in the educational success and economic boom of the
Philippines as well as the other surrounding nations. Despite the great linguistic
diversity of the country. English continues to receive high functional popularity in the
different areas of daily life in the nation.

language acquisition and the academic performance of the Grade 6 students of Padada
Central Elementary School.
Research questions

1. What are the academic benefits of learning second language in elementary

school?
2. What would be the cognitive benefits of learning second language?
3. How does it effect to their academic grades?

Hypothesis

show signs of enhanced creativity and mental flexibility.
2. The cognitive benefits of learning second language have a direct impact on
child’s academic achievement.
3. This will affect their academic grades because it includes oral reading and
vocabulary skills.

Theoretical lens

This research is anchored on the behaviorist theory of (Gascoigne Lally, 2001),

states that, the academic benefits is for the students by providing active learning
opportunities. The use of the L2 is often confined to the classroom, and students do not
picture a concrete application beyond the academic world. It allows the students to use
their academic knowledge in real-life situations in order to meet needs in their own
community (McPherson, 1996).

The study focused on the academic benefit of second language learning at the
elementary level of Central Elementary School of Padada. It focuses on how pupil
benefit from learning second language in their academics.
The study will emphasize what academic capabilities children do or what they
benefit from it for their future field. Learn faster and easier to enhance future career
