Universiti Teknologi Mara: Analytical Chemistry (Chm421) AS/TEST 3/JUNE 2020

This document contains a 3 question analytical chemistry test covering various titration techniques. Question 1 involves acid-base titration of cerussite to determine lead content and silver nitrate titration of bromide. Question 2 defines complexometric titration and involves EDTA titration of water hardness. Question 3 covers permanganate titration of sodium oxalate, differentiation of iodometry and iodimetry, and chemical oxygen demand analysis using an oxidizing agent to treat wastewater.

ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

QUESTION 1 (15 MARKS)

a) Cerussite is a carbonate mineral of lead with the composition PbCO3. A 1.304 g of

cerussite was crushed and added to 50.00 mL of 0.250 M HNO3 in excess. The
mixture was heated and stirred until all the PbCO3 was dissolved. The unreacted acid
was titrated to endpoint with 0.104 M NaOH, requiring 28.00 mL of NaOH to reach the
endpoint.

i) State a suitable indicator for the above titration.

(1 mark)

ii) Sketch a fully labelled titration curve for the above titration.
(2 marks)

iii) Calculate the mass (%) of PbCO3 in the cerussite.

(6 marks)

b) The % w/w bromide (Br–) in a 0.6712 g sample was determined by a precipitation

titration. After adding 50.00 mL of 0.05619 M AgNO3 and allowing the precipitate to
form, the remaining silver was back titrated with 0.05322 M KSCN, requiring 35.14 mL
to reach the end point.

i) Name a method of precipitation titration.

(1 mark)

ii) Report the % w/w Br– in the sample.

(5 marks)

QUESTION 2 (15 MARKS)

a) Define complexometric titration.

(2 marks)

b) A 150 mL of the water sample was prepared with a solution buffered to pH 10 and
titrated with 0.0125 M EDTA, requiring 15.75 mL to reach the Eriochrome Black T end
point.

i) Identify the role of buffer in this titration.

(1 mark)
ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (CHM421) AS/TEST 3/JUNE 2020

ii) Justify why the titration cannot be performed at pH below 7 and pH >10.
(4 marks)

iii) State the colour change at the end point.

(2 marks)

iv) Calculate the hardness of water in terms of parts per million CaCO3 and comment
on whether the water sample is hard or not.
(6 marks)

QUESTION 3 (15 MARKS)

a) 0.2640 g of sodium oxalate is dissolved in a flask and titrated with potassium

permanganate, requiring 30.74 mL of to reach the end point. The equation for this
reaction is:

5Na2C2O4 + 2KMnO4 + 8H2SO4 ---> 2MnSO4 + K2SO4 + 5Na2SO4 + 10CO2 + 8H2O

i) Give a reason why potassium permanganate is self-indicator.

(1 mark)

ii) Calculate the molarity of potassium permanganate.

(5 marks)

b) i) Differentiate between iodometry and iodimetry titration.

(4 marks)

ii) Name the indicator used in redox titrations involving iodine.

(1 mark)

c) A chemical oxygen demand (COD) analysis in wastewater is to be performed using

strong acidic solution with a known excess amount of oxidizing agent under reflux
conditions.

i) Identify the oxidizing agent used in COD determination.

(1 mark)

ii) Chloride ion present in wastewater will affect the COD determination. Explain on
how to overcome this problem.

(2 marks)

iii) Indicate the colour of solution after reflux to show that the oxidizing agent used is
sufficient to oxidize the organic and inorganic contents of the wastewater.
