5. Functional description of the activated carbon filter

The activated carbon filtration systems CWG AK CI 1" / CWG AK CI 1.25" / CWG AK CI 1.5" are fully automatic
filtration systems used to remove chlorine or organic contaminants such as humic matters and other substances
such as halogenated hydrocarbons and pesticides from drinking and well water.

5.1 Filter operation

The water being treated flows from the control valve inlet downward through the activated carbon. In the process, the
organic contaminants are absorbed, and chlorine destroyed through oxidation. Activated carbon filters with the Clack
WS control valves are fully automatic. In addition to the above contaminants, particles are also filtered out with each
filtration. The clear, clean water runs through a riser pipe and to the control valve outlet. The activated carbon is not
regenerated but merely backwashed with water to remove filtered out particles and loosen up the activated carbon.

Assembly and Commissioning Instructions CWG AK CI 1" / AK CI 1.25" / AK CI 1.5"

Intended use | 7

5.2 Backwashing (cleaning the filter bed)

During backwash (self-cleaning), the control valves internally reverses the flow of the filtration system. The activated
carbon is cleaned by raising the filter bed whilst water flows upward. This removes particles from the filter bed and
flushes these out the drain. At the same time, the filter bed is loosened.

5.3 Fast rinse (rinse)

After backwashing, the control valve reverses the water flow again. Water passes downward through the filter bed.
With fast rinse (also referred to as rinse), the water is passed to the wastewater (same as backwash). The fast rinse
reliably flushes any particles still in the filter bed (e.g. abrasion or activated carbon grains) out of the filter bed before
the filter returns to operation.

6. Intended use

• The CWG AK CI 1" / CWG AK CI 1.25" / CWG AK CI 1.5" activated carbon filtration system may only be used to
remove chlorine and organic contaminants from drinking and well water.
• Any other use of the CWG AK CI 1" /
CWG AK CI 1.25" / CWG AK CI 1.5" activated carbon filtration system is considered improper use.
• The limits in the technical data apply, pressure, temperature, and flow rate.
• Intended use also includes observing all information in the operating instructions and complying with the
inspection and service schedule.
• Improper use means use of the system as:
o Storage tank (after removing the filter material)
o Pressure reservoir (water or air)
• Do not modify, install add-ons or convert the system without the written approval of the manufacturer / supplier.
• Immediately replace any parts which are not in excellent condition. Only use original spare parts.
• CWG Watertechnology GmbH assumes no liability for damages due to failure to observe this notice. The user is
solely liable for the risk.
• The operating instructions must be observed to ensure proper operation and warranty claims.
• Therefore, first use the operating instructions before working on the activated carbon filtration system!

The untreated water pressure must not exceed 6 bar.

9.2 Unpacking the components

Systems of size AK 1252 come factory prefilled, with the main control valve preinstalled. Larger systems (model: AK
1465 / AK 1865 / AK 2160 / AK 3072) are not filled at the factory due to their weight. The filter material, the support
gravel, the pressure tank, the riser and the control valve (if applicable the flexible connection hoses, if ordered) are
delivered as individual parts.

NOTE
Unload the shock-sensitive pressure tanks with care.
Lift the pressure tanks during transport.
Never roll pressure tanks!!

9.3 Assembling the adapters (only 1" and 1.25" valves)

At the back of the 1 inch and 1.25 inch are two openings with outside thread and arrows, indicating the water inlet
and outlet. The bypass mounts to these threads. The 90° vertical adapters screw onto the bypass inlet and outlet.
The BSPT pieces then screw onto the inlet and outlet as the transition to European threads. These two BSPT pieces
are inside a plastic bag along with installation instructions. The description is titled: WS Fitting 1.25" Plastic BSPT.

9.4 Aligning the filtration system

Screw the control head with the BSPT connectors installed onto the pressure tank and set the tank (unfilled) in the
location where the system will ultimately be located. The floor at the installation site should be level. The filtration
system and the water line should be spaced to ensure the drain hose and the hoses used to connect the control
head to the water line will not be kinked.
Please ensure the wastewater end of the hose is secured well and will not slip out, as the wastewater is pressurised
as it is discharged from the hose and can cause recoil.

9.6 Installing the riser

The pressure tank includes a riser. The bottom end of the riser either has a single basket (AK 1252) or a
(preinstalled) riser pipe with star (AK 1465, AK 1865, AK 2160 and AK 3072). The riser is typically inside the
pressure tank for transportation. Otherwise, centre the riser in the pressure tank and close the top of the tube with a
plug or adhesive tape to keep material being added out of the riser.

Riser

Riser centred in the tank. Close the top of the riser.

NOTE
Important when filling!
Particularly ensure during filling that material does not enter the riser.
Even one particle can adversely affect the correct function of the activated carbon filter.

9.7 Filling the pressure tank

Fill the pressure tank in the following order:
1. Now add water to the tank until it is approx. 20% full of water (be sure the riser does not shift from the centre
position or float.
2. First add the included gravel to the tank, pushing the riser onto the bottom of the tank so the tube is upright in
the middle of the tank.
3. Add activated carbon to the pressure tank.
4. After filling, fill the filter with water (to approx. 10 cm below the top tank opening).
5. Remove the cap or adhesive tape from the top opening of the riser. If necessary, remove any activated carbon
grains from the thread.

9. System assembly | 15

6. Place the main control valve on the pressure tank thread and first screw on anti-clockwise to determine the turn
of the thread. Then tighten the control valve clockwise until the O-Ring is no longer visible.
7. Connect the inlet, discharge, and wastewater lines.

NOTE
The activated carbon must soak in the water for 24 hours before commissioning further
so the pores in the activated carbon are fully wetted and the enclosed air can escape
completely from the activated carbon particles.
Never start backwashing before these 24 hours have passed!!!!!!

NOTE

Tighten the swivel nuts on the control valve connections by hand!

Never use tools!!

CAUTION
Risk of leaks.
Due to the heavy weight of filter media and water, moving the pressure tank can harm
the pressure tank foot and warm the piping.
Do not move the pressure tank!

9.8 Connecting to the power supply

Connect the power cable at the back of the control head to the power supply and connect the plug to the socket.
The activated carbon filtration system is now fully assembled.

NOTE
Programming the activated carbon filtration system:
The main control valve settings are factory programmed.
The date for the first backwashing must be configured or selected during commissioning
(by triggering manual backwashing), since the interval between backwashes is fixed.

NOTE

Changing the factory presets of the control valve may result in malfunctions or even
complete system failure. Please contact your dealer for advice if you intend to make
changes.
As a precaution, please note the water treatment system must be connected in
compliance with local installation regulations, general guidelines (e.g. water distribution
companies, public utilities, VDE, DIN, DVGW, or ÖVGW or SVGW). Therefore, a safety
device hazard class 2 is required, and the installation site should also have a floor drain.

11. Commissioning the activated carbon filtration system | 19

At the top level of the display you can now press the NEXT key for 2 queries:

• Time
• Number of days until next backwash

This is a countdown value based on how system usage.

11. Commissioning the activated carbon filtration system

11.1 Backwashing the activated carbon

After connecting the filtration system and the 24 hours of wetting the activated carbon have passed, you can open
the water supply to flush the system.

The filter material must be flushed by backwashing to flush out dust particles from handling and transporting the
activated carbon. This is done by running two manual backwashes.

Proceed as follows:
STEP 1
Press the REGEN key until you hear the motor sound in the control valve.

After a few seconds, the bottom of the display will read BACKWASH with a countdown above it (5 minutes for
backwash). You will hear water rushing in the system.
When the backwash reaches the countdown, the valve will make motor sounds and switch over, and the display will
read RINSE and another countdown (10 minutes).
At the end of the second countdown the display will show the time again.
STEP 2
Repeat the steps under step 1 (second backwash).
The system has now been flushed and is ready to supply chlorine-free water.

The system is fully automatic. No further actions are required.

20 | Power outages

12. Power outages

In the event of a power outage, the system will remember the time (continue running) but the display will flash. This
alerts the user to the power outage. Frequent power outages shorten the battery life and it will need to be replaced
sooner.

13. System maintenance

The main control valve of the activated carbon filtration system must be serviced every 24 months. Contaminants
(particles) in untreated water can cause deposits inside the control valve and the slits of the upper distributor nozzle,
which can result in clogs and malfunctions in the medium term. Service includes cleaning the control valve, replacing
the upper basket, and, if necessary, the piston seal cage.

13.1 Using the Clack installation spanner

The WS installation spanner is required when working on the Clack WS 1, WS 1.25 and WS 1.5 valve.
The installation spanner is not necessarily required for commissioning.
