Characteristics of Christian Faith

1. Total and Absolute
Faith in God calls for a total and absolute adherence to him. This total and
absolute adherence implies our 100 % commitment to The God who revealed Himself
to us and who had loved us from the start. Christ himself provides, especially in his
passion, death and resurrection, the best example of this total and absolute
commitment to God. (CFC 123)
Challenge:
__         How will I live out my total and absolute faith in the present context?

2. Trinitarian
For us Christians, our total and absolute adherence is to the Triune God who revealed
Himself through Christ our Lord. It is our friendship with Christ and through Chist with
the Father and the Holy Spirit. Through Christ’s witness to His Father in His teaching,
preaching, miracles, and especially in his passion, death and resurrection, we come to
believe in Christ our Savior, in the Father and in the Holy Spirit sent into our hearts. Our
faith then consists in our personal conviction and belief in God our Father revealed by
Jesus Christ, his own divine Son-made-man, and their presence to us through the Holy
Spirit. (CFC 124)
Challenge:

         How will I live out a Trinitarian faith?

3. Loving, Maturing and Missionary
Christian Faith is life giving. It matures only through love, for “the man without love has
known nothing of God, for God is love (Jn.4:8). This love must be inseparably love of
God and love of neighbour like Christ’s. If our faith had already matured through love,
we do not keep it to ourselves but we share it with others. This impels us to mission, to
evangelize by bringing others the Good News. Such missionary faith leads us to do
good for others, to be of service to others. It becomes the test of authentic faith
because if we believe in Christ’s word and Kingdom, we will truly bear witness and
proclaim it in turn. This means our calling to share in the threefold mission of Christ as
priest, prophet and king which we receive during our baptism. (CFC 125)
Points to ponder:
         How will I live out my loving, maturing and missionary faith?
4. Informed and Communitarian
According to PCP II, Catholic Faith must be informed, that is believing Jesus’ words, and
accepting his teachings, trusting that he has the words of eternal life.” There must first
be knowledge of the teachings we believe in. The truths that we know, should not only
be in the mind but in the heart. This faith is communitarian since it is the Church that
transmits to us Christ’s revelation through the Scriptures and tradition. It is also through
the Church that our adequate faith response is made possible. (CFC 126)
Challenge:
__         How will I live out an informed faith in the community?
__         How will I make my faith communitarian?
5. Inculturated
Our faith in God and Jesus Christ is never separated from the typical Filipino faith in
family and friends. On one hand we live out our faith in God precisely in our daily
relationships with family, friends, fellow workers, etc. On the other hand, each of these
is radically affected by our faith in God our Father, in Jesus Christ His only begotten
Son, our Savior and in the Holy Spirit dwelling within us in grace.
Challenge:
         How will I express my inculturated faith?
These are the essential Characteristics of Christian Faith. So as we live out our life as
baptized and faithful Christians, we are always reminded of how our faith should be
authentically practiced.
