Science - Q2 Lesson

Physical changes alter the physical properties of matter but do not change its chemical composition. They include changes in size, shape, state of matter, or mixing without chemical reaction. Chemical changes form new substances with different chemical and physical properties. Signs of chemical changes include production of light, heat, gas, or color changes. Chemical and physical changes both alter the appearance of matter but only chemical changes create new materials.

PHYSICAL CHANGES

Physical Change
 is a change in physical properties of matter.
 It is a change in the way matter looks.
 It can be a change in size, shape, form and
phase.
 A change of state is also a physical change.
 Matter looks different after a physical change,
but it is still made of the same kind of matter.
Illustrations:
 When liquid water freezes, its state changes
from a liquid to a solid. The water looks
different, but it is still water.
 Tearing a sheet of paper is a physical
change. The size of the paper is different,
but the paper is still paper.
 Painting an object does not change what the
object is made of.
 Not all types of matter change in the same
way. Like if you pull a rubber band, it
stretches. When you let go, it returns to its
original size. If you pull on a metal spoon,
nothing happens. If you pull on a piece of
thread, it might break.

What happens when you mix matter?

MIXTURE is another kind of physical change.

 The substances do not react with each other.
 Anything made by combining two or more
different substance.
 It refers to different kinds of matter mixed
together.
Example: when you pour milk on your cereal,
you are making a mixture.
 The properties of each kind of matter might
change.
Example: The cereal might be soggy; however,
the milk is still milk and cereal are still cereal
 It can be a combination of solids, liquids and
gases.
Example:
Vegetable soup is a mixture of liquids and
solids.
Salad dressing can be a mixture of different
liquids.
Clouds are a mixture of air, dust and water
droplets.
 There are many kinds of mixture.

heat. The light and heat is a sign of chemical
change
 Formation of gas
When you add baking soda to vinegar, carbon
dioxide gas form. As this gas escapes from the
liquid, bubbles form.
 Color change
The Statue of Liberty used to be the same color
as a 10-centavo coin. It turned green as a result
of a chemical change.

and ash. As the log burns, it releases light and
