Simon Says. The Teacher Will Have in Mind Some of The Phrasal Verbs

This lesson plan introduces phrasal verbs to a 4th grade class of 17 students over 50 minutes. Lesson objectives:
To introduce the topic of phrasal verbs
To focus on phrasal verbs connected with instructions
To associate phrasal verbs with actions
To identify the significance of new vocabulary items
To use new words in sentences of their own
To reinforce phrasal verbs
Materials/aids: Board/Cards/Audio material/Worksheets
Skills involved: speaking, listening, reading, writing
Class management: whole class activity, individual work, group work

ACTIVITY 1: Warm-up Interaction Timing


Aim: to introduce the topic of phrasal verbs
Procedure: T → Ss 5 min.
The teacher tells the students that they are going to play a game called Ss → T
Simon says. The teacher will have in mind some of the phrasal verbs
used to give students instructions in the classroom such as stand up, sit
down, pick up your pen, put your pen down, turn on/off the lights, turn
on/off your phone, and so on. The teacher shouts out the instructions –
some with ‘Simon says’ before the instruction, and some without it.
Students are only supposed to follow your instructions if they hear
‘Simon says’ before the instruction. Otherwise, they should ignore it.
ACTIVITY 2
Aim: to use multi-word verbs in a personal context T → Ss 15 min.
The teacher writes a few phrasal verbs on the board and asks the students Ss → T
to make sentences giving true information about themselves. Here are Ss →Ss
some examples of the sentences the teacher may elicit from students at
this stage:
a. I get up at ..........every day.
b. When I grow up I want to be .......
c. I turn off the TV when .......
d. I put on warm clothes when .....
ACTIVITY 3
Aims: to associate phrasal verbs with actions/movement
Procedure: T → Ss 15 min.
The class is split into two teams A and B. A student from Team A comes Ss →Ss
to the front of the class, picks out a card and mimes the situation. Ss → T
Students from both teams then try to guess what is being mimed. The
first student to guess correctly scores a point for their team. Then,
a student from Team B does a mime and so on. The teams are told before
the mime the information they need to look for and how many phrasal
verbs are in the mime.
ACTIVITY 4 T → Ss 10 min.
Aim: to identify phrasal verbs Ss →Ss
Procedure: Ss → T
Students are asked to listen to a song called ‘At school’. They are given
the lyrics of the song to fill in with the missing phrasal verbs.
ACTIVITY 5 T → Ss 5 min.
Providing feedback and setting homework. Ss → T
