debriefing.
KEY CONCEPTS & STANDARDS
Big Idea & Essential Learn about different types of weather and the region that they belong to. Start with California and maybe one other location, but do not move
Questions much further, or else it will be confusing.
Learning
Students will be able to identify different types of weather based on pictures and create a miniweather system in a bottle.
Outcome(s)
This lesson will serve as an entry point for different types of weather. The later lessons will go more into depth, but this lesson specifically helps
Summary
to scaffold the students for later lessons on different types of weather. It will allow the students to grasp the vocabulary concepts.
CA Next Generation Science Standards (2014)
Standards Grade: Kindergarten
Standard: KESS32. Ask questions to obtain information about the purpose of weather forecasting to prepare for, and respond to, severe weather.
The next part of the lesson will go into the NGSS Standard for KESS21. Use and share observations of local weather conditions to describe
Comments
patterns over time.
ASSESSMENTS
Assessment/Rubrics Students will show understanding by identifying specific types of weather as well as create a tornado in a tube by following directions.

IMPLEMENTATION
1. TTW open by having students look outside or go outside to identify the type of weather that is outside at the moment.
2. TTW ask a few students to share what they observe.
3. TTW instruct the students to sit back in their seats.
4. TTW ask a few students to describe other types of weather that they have seen.
5. TTW pull up the power point and explain that there are different types of weather.
6. TSW discuss each slide and state whether or not they have experienced this type of weather.
7. TTW ask the students how they would prepare for this type of weather.
8. TTW explain that weather can sometimes be scary, but not all weather is bad. She will then discuss why certain "scary" types can be good
for the environment.
9. Instruct the students that they are going to create their own weather in a bottle (This is not the type of weather that most people
experience).
Sequence of
10. TTW tell the students that they will be creating a tornado, which can be dangerous when it happens in nature.
Activities
11. TTW instruct the students to fill their bottles 3/4 full with water and up to 2 drops of blue food coloring (The teacher may need to do the
food coloring).
12. TTW instruct the students to add a few drops of soap to their bottles of water and food coloring.
13. TTW instruct the students to sprinkle a little bit of glitter into their bottles (The teacher will probably end up doing the glitter).
14. TSW will close their lid as tight as they can so that the liquid does not spill out.
15. TTW instruct the students to hold the neck of the bottle and filp it upside down and move it in circular motions. (TTW also model this as
well).
The water should begin to swirl and a minitornado should form.
16. TTW ask the students to describe in detail what is happening in their bottle.
17. If there is time, TSW should talk about emergency kits and what they are and what should go in their kit at home.
18. TSW begin to clean up as we talk about emergency kits.
Grouping Strategies
Differentiated Some students will need help in filling their water bottles or adding the soap or glitter. I will also provide instructions in spanish on paper, but I am
Instruction aware that students will not necessarily be able to read them fluently.

REFLECTIONS
This is the beginning of the Unit, so the students will not have done much with weather. We will have read a few books on weather and patterns
Prior to Lesson
and different types of weather.
We will move forward into the weather unit and will do more activities on what types of weather there are and which ones will affect their
PostLesson
regions.
