UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

ACTIVITY 2

I. CONTEX
In chapter 2, we have learned how society and culture greatly affect our concept of
the Self. This pandemic has showed us what kind of people we are and our socially
and culturally formed concept of the Self.

II. SITUATION (What?)

Interview 3 to 5 people and ask them what toxic Filipino Culture do they think is
prevalent/evident in our society, especially during this time of pandemic/crisis.

III. ANALYSIS (How? Why?)

What are your insights from the interview you've conducted? Make an
analysis/reflection using these guide questions:
*How do these traits or behavior (toxic Filipino culture) affect you as an
individual/person?
*Should these traits or behavior be tolerated?
*As a student, what actions do you think can be taken to address these issues in our
society/culture?
*How do you think can we attain a valid and dignified concept or understanding of the
self despite these kinds of toxic filipino culture and issues in our society?

IV. OTHER INSTRUCTIONS

Students may present their analysis either by a written report or essay. You may also
do a PPT or video presentation. You don't have to answer all the guide questions one
by one. These are just guide questions to help you construct your analysis or
reflection.
INTERVIEWS
Question: What toxic Filipino Culture do you think is prevalent/evident in
our society, especially during this time of pandemic/crisis?

1: “I think the toxic Filipino Culture prevalent in our society specially during this times of
pandemic is being two-faced. Parang dun sa mga nagrarally ang dami nilang sinabi
about social distancing pero tiklop naman dun sa Manila bay na ang crowded tapos
hindi naobserve yung social distancing”.

2: ‘At these times where triumphs are challenging our world as well as our goverment,
toxicity of Filipino upon hearing the voice of the youth about the administration became
prevalent. As a youth, it is inevitable for us to speak up for what we think is not right. It is
society's stereotype that if you're younger, your opinions regarding with alarming issues
in our country are always invalid. This stigma became prevalent because it is instilled to
the mindset of adult one's that if your age is not the same as theirs', it's still a long
process for you to make a change”.

3: ‘One toxic culture that is not limited to Filipino is the so called "Cancel culture" where
mostly netizens find a flaw and everyone has an opinion about a certain issue even
though they don't have the expertise on that certain topic, cancel culture is not always
toxic, in certain cases it gives people a voice but this power is now being abused and
the intensity of other's venting should be abolished”.

4: ‘Crabmentality, filipino devote so much of ther time in gossiping and back-bitting. It's
their way of deviating people's attention on their inadequacy by focusing on other
people's fault... another is lack of discipline, we have laws and regulations in our country
and yet many people disobey and ignore it in order to prioritize of what they want...”

5: "Mabilis mag-react" or I think it counts na ren as overreacting to some degree. Since

the majority of our time in the last 6 months were spent at home, we've been more
inclined to browse social media ano to pass the time. Then syempre new articles and
issues come out left and right, and some Filipinos tend to rant immediately without
understanding the context, trying to sound critical pero kapag iniintindi naman as a
whole, shallow arguments lang naman pala ang nirarant. This is usually found at the
comment section of posts that are about or related to politics. Particularly in Facebook
and it's kind of disappointing."
ANALYSIS

Filipinos were known for their most popular quality and trait of being hospitable,
respectful, and hardworking citizens according to the foreign visitors in the country who
visited and traveled around the Philippines. Filipinos help one another more popularly
known as “Bayanihan” without expecting anything in return so that undertaking their
tasks and responsibilities becomes much easier. Filipinos are very resilient in times of
calamities and catastrophes. But above that, Filipinos always manage to rise above the
challenges, and instead of agonizing, they manage to pick themselves up, smile, and
continue living.

There are a lot of good things the Philippines and the Filipinos in particular, are
known for. Some are positive while there are some negative. But in this paper, I would
be discussing some of those who no one dares to share, the toxicity of the Filipinos
which is prevalent/evident in the society, especially during this time of pandemic/crisis.
This isn't to bring down the country but a more objective view of addressing some toxic
aspects of the culture in the Philippines.

In the Philippines, people are showing numerous unpleasant character traits.

Some if it is being judgmental, backstabber, favoritism, crab mentality, always late,
‘tsimosa’, pakialamero, ‘paasa’, dirty minded, and ‘pilosopo’. Something that is very
common is that many people will judge you because of your physical appearance even
if they do not know who you are; if you’re beautiful, you get more friends, you became
the priority and you’re loved. In short, you get the advantage. Another thing we can
notice in Filipinos is being unappreciative; You give a free burger; they ask where the
fries are. Comparing, complaining, and being ungrateful for the things received. When
you stop giving and they can't take advantage of you anymore, you become a bad
person. The crab mentality and ‘hilaan-pababa’ mindset of some Filipinos are the worst,
where relatives are no exception; when someone is succeeding and rising, they start to
devote so much of their time in gossiping and backstabbing. It's their way of deviating
people's attention on their inadequacy by focusing on other people's mistakes.
Moreover, Filipinos are shame-oriented, their major concern is social approval,
acceptance by a group as well as belonging to a group. Their behavior is generally
dependent on what others will think and their desires and ambitions depend on what
pleases or displeases others. And with that being said, some of the Filipinos are eager
to appear smart and fierce particularly in social media. But it didn’t stop there. The
pandemic, COVID-19, revealed Filipinos’ ignorance, disobedience and lack of discipline.
The vendors took advantage of the society’s need in vitamins, alcohols, masks or face
shields by overpricing while the ‘privilege’ didn’t even think of the other people’s need
and hoard supplies just because they have the money. Protocols were hardly followed,
a simple mistake were criticized, and the government were blamed. But it isn’t entirely
just the citizens, but also the government officials being favorable and prioritizing people
with high ranks and titles than those who are below average.

People are scared, we all are. But if we stop belittling those who have nothing
and stop dragging down those above us and cooperate with one another instead, this
might have been finished long ago. We have one enemy, and that is the virus, so we
must not start chaos and fight each other because this is a battle we must overcome
together as a whole, not a battle someone must win alone for a credit which isn’t even
worth all along. We should stop blaming others for our own problems and miseries,
refrain from doing nothing on our own while putting all responsibilities for survival to the
hands and the government. We must recognize what traits must be tolerated and what’s
not. “Kabataan and pagasa ng bayan” so If we carry on with the toxicity of the society,
our future will be a chaos. Altogether, we must act accordingly to what we want the
future youth must act to maintain peace and order. Because what a child see in their
childhood, is something they will bear until they reach adulthood. We must not do what
we do not want others do to us. We must be happy for one’s success and open-
minded to our country’s condition. It is important to preserve our culture
In conclusion, values and traits start in ourselves. We are the one who made
these values possible and later on it reflects to our personal life. Filipino is always a
Filipino not the other races. On the other hand, we have to value of what Filipino values
that we have. In return to this value, we will make us to be a good, respectful, and
obedient and loyalty people. The toxicity of the Filipino culture is something rooted on
our way of thinking that we should put an end to. Toxic Filipino traits doesn’t apply
generally because a lot of Filipinos are still capable of maintaining the true qualities of
being a Filipino that will last and can be past from generations to generations. Filipino
values exist for a reason and aren't inherently bad or "dangerous". Filipino Values in the
Philippines is something we can teach and make a sense of changes for us to be
reflecting of whatever we made things to be possible. Filipinos must be continuously be
seen with a value that include fostering a sense of peace, harmony and freedom.
