Semester: Spring 2020 Date: November 26, 2020 Course Code: CE 212 Course Title: Structural Mechanics and Materials Lab

This document is a midterm quiz for a structural mechanics and materials lab course. It contains 5 questions related to mechanical properties testing: [1] calculating modulus of elasticity, modulus of toughness, and percentage elongation from a load-deflection curve; [2] calculating shear strength from single and double shear tests; [3] calculating tensile strength from hardness test results; [4] calculating impact test hammer height and maximum velocity; and [5] defining proof strength, yield strength, and describing the usefulness of impact testing. The document provides diagrams, formulas, and specifies values for various parameters in the questions.

Mid Term Quiz

University of Asia Pacific

Department of Civil Engineering

Course Code: CE 212 Semester: Spring 2020

Course Title: Structural Mechanics and Materials Lab Date: November 26, 2020
Exam Duration: 50 mins Full Marks: 30

Answer all the questions

1. Figure 1 is the load vs. deflection curve of an axially loaded material having gauge length and
cross-sectional area of ‘’ inch and ‘’ in2 respectively. Calculate a) Modulus of elasticity, b)
Modulus of Toughness, and c) Percentage elongation.
[ = 4 + 0.2*The Last digit of your Registration No.,  = 2 + 0.2*The Last digit of your
Registration No.] [4+4+2=10]

Co-ordinates of the points are:

A (0, 0), B (0.01, 4.0), C (0.05, 5.0),
A Deflection,  (inch) D (0.11, 4)

2. In direct shear test of a specimen of mild steel, ‘X’ kN shear force is applied by a shear cutter for
single shear and ‘Y’ kN for double shear. If diameter of the specimen is 12 mm, calculate the shear
strength of the metal from single and double shear test.
[X = 50 + The Last digit of your Registration No., Y = 110 + The Last digit of your Registration
No.] [5]

3. If Hardness Number ‘N’ is found from Hardness Test of a metal (except steel) by Rockwall
Hardness Tester using scale C, calculate tensile strength of the metal.
[N= 70 + The Last digit of your Registration No.] [5]
Given formula:
RB = 35 ~ 100, BHN = 7300/(130−RB)
RC = 20 ~ 40, BHN = 20,000/(100−RC), RC  41, BHN = 25,000/(100−RC)

Ultimate Tensile Strength from Brinell Hardness Number

Material Tensile Strength (ksi)
For heat treated alloy steels with Brinell No. 250 to 400 0.42 × Brinell No.
For Heat-Treated Carbon Steels as rolled normalized or annealed 0.43 × Brinell No.
For Medium Carbon Steels as rolled normalized or annealed 0.44 × Brinell No.
For Mild Steels normalized or annealed 0.46 × Brinell No.
For non-ferrous rough alloy such as Duralumin Brinell No/2 − 2.0

maximum velocity of the hammer. [Given: specimen cross section = 6 mm x 6 mm, specimen
length = ‘L’ mm, H’ = 300 mm, Weight of Hammer = ‘W’ kg, Modulus of toughness = 152 N/mm2]
[L = 50 + 0.5*The Last digit of your Registration No., W = 40 + 0.3*The Last digit of your
