BPT 504 Assignment 1

This document derives expressions to convert between the h-parameters of the common-emitter (CE) and common-base (CB) configurations in BJT circuits. It shows that: 1) hrc for CB can be obtained from hre for CE using hrc = 1 - hre 2) hfc for CB can be obtained from hfe for CE using hfc = -(1 + hfe) 3) hic for CB is equal to hie for CE 4) hoc for CB is equal to hoe for CE The document uses small-signal hybrid-pi models, Kirchhoff's current law, and definitions of the h-parameters to derive the conversion

1. Show that h-parameter of common-collector configuration can be obtained from the h-

parameter of common-emitter configuration.

Figure 1: Hybrid Model For CE Configuration

The CE h-parameter circuit is show in fig., where capital letters are used to represent the rms value of the
sinusoidal voltage or current.

Expression for hrc By definition,

Vbc Vbe + Vec
hrc = =
Vec Ib =0 Vec Ib =0

Vbe
hrc = 1 + (1)
Vec Ib =0
If Ib = 0 then Ic = −Ie . The potential difference between point B and E when Ib = 0 given by

Vbe = hre Vce (2)

From Eq. 1 and Eq. 2, We have

hre Vce
hrc = 1+
Vec
Ib =0

hrc = 1 − hre (3)

Expression for hf c By definition,

Ie
hf c = (4)
Ib Vec =0

If Vce = 0 or Vec = 0 then current I through hoe will be zero. Thus

Ic = hf e Ib
We know that the expression
Ie + Ic + Ib = 0 (5)
is valid for all configuration.
Ib + Ic
hf c = −
Ib Vec =0

Ic
hf c = − 1 +
Ib Vec =0

hf c = −(1 + hf e ) (6)

Expression for hic By definition

Vbc
hic = (7)
Ib Vec =0
which can be written as
Vbe + Vec Vbe
hic = =
Ib
Vec =0 Ib Vec =0
If Vc e = 0 then the potential difference between points B and point E given by
Vbe = Ib hie (8)
Using Eq.8 in expression for hic ,we have
hic = hie (9)

Expression for hoc By definition

Vec
hoc = (10)
Ie Ib =0
Using Eq.5, We have
Vec Vec
hoc =− =−
Ib + Ic Ib =0 Ic Ib =0

From fig If Ib = 0 then the current through hoe will be I = −Ic . Thus
Vce = hoe Ic (11)

Putting this into expression of hoc

hoc = hoe (12)

Putting everything together we have Conversion formulae from CB to CE h-parameter.

hic = hie hrc = 1 − hre

hf c = −(1 + hf e ) hoc = hoe
