Campbell, Alexia Fernández. “US Police Chiefs Are Fighting the Crackdown on

‘Sanctuary Cities.’” Vox, Vox, 18 Aug. 2017, www.vox.com/policy-and-

politics/2017/8/18/16130954/police-sanctuary-cities.

Campbell explains how the idea of police departments giving sanctuary to violent

criminals is ridiculous. This article explains how the police are fighting the “crackdown

on sanctuary cities” which is why police do not want to house sanctuary to criminals.

This is a narrative, and it angers a lot of police officials, however there are officers who

feel the opposite and would like to house refuge to immigrants.

I feel this article is beneficial to my paper by providing a positive and negative outcome

with different feedback.

Correal, Annie. “Citing Murder, Top Trump Official Condemns N.Y. Sanctuary Policy.” The

New York Times, The New York Times, 17 Jan. 2020,

www.nytimes.com/2020/01/17/nyregion/reeaz-khan-immigration-maria-fuertes.html.

Correal tells us how a 92-year-old woman was killed by an immigrant and that one phone

call could have saved her. This article explains how the murder/rapist was released after

months in detainment and how he should have been held for possible deportation. It is
Curtin 2

also explained how this incident in time became a flashpoint for debates on immigration

and sanctuary cities.

This article goes in depth about how a woman was hard by a criminal who was an

immigrant. With this it shows the harm of having criminals live free in a sanctuary city.

I feel this relates to my topic because it shows a negative aspect of how sanctuary cities

are being used for bad not good.

“Frequently Asked Questions about Sanctuary Cities.” Justice for Immigrants, 24 Mar.

2020, justiceforimmigrants.org/what-we-are-working-on/immigrant-detention/sanctuary-

cities-backgrounder/.

This source gives specific questions that are asked by Americans about the sanctuary

cities. Here questions about the immigrants and how the cities work are answered and

explained to an extent that no one is being verbally bashed.

While this article is mainly a question database, it is also a way for us to understand how

our economy is working and see which questions are negative and positive.

This source is important to my paper because to gives a sense of humanity to it. It allows

for firsthand questions to be showcased and elaborated on.

Hauslohner, Abigail. “ICE Provides Local Police a Way to Work around 'Sanctuary' Policies,

This source explains the agreements ICE has made and how different cities are taking to

the new policies enforced by them. ICE has 287 (g) agreements with over 75 cities and

counties where the local law enforcement agrees to help ICE and detail illegal aliens.

This article elaborates on how there is distrust in law enforcement with immigrants. Not

all things about sanctuary cities are always viewed positive, this article shows the

negative and how police are working to make American immigrant free.

This article is important for my essay because it shows a negative factor. It allows for an

argument to be made throughout my essay.

Sanctuary Cities do not Guarantee Safety for Immigrants. This article explains that the

mayors who established the city never stated how their cities would prevent the

government from coming into the city unwanted. Throughout this article it also explains

how Obama treated the situation, but that Trump has not been entirely clear on how he is

going to handle rounding up the undocumented immigrants.

Curtin 4

This article shows how the sanctuary cities are not a positive aspect when it comes to the

illegal immigrants. It shows that Federal Government is still not controlled, and that the

president does not have an action plan yet.

This source fits into my essay because it shows how the cities fit but do not make

everything right. Here there are many downfalls stated, but it shows how easily things

can be flipped back and forth.

Misra, Tanvi. “Sanctuary Cities Are Safer and More Productive.” Bloomberg.com, Bloomberg,

26 Jan. 2017, www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-01-26/in-fact-sanctuary-cities-

have-less-poverty-and-crime

This article explains in depth how the sanctuary cities are safer and more productive for

the economy. It was found that there were 35.3 fewer violent and property crimes per

10,00 people and 65.4 fewer crimes per 10,000 people. The cities also registered better

economic conditions than larger cities.

This article is a way to see positive outcomes on sanctuary cities. With this it is shown

how the cities have bettered the economy and why they are important.

This is important to my paper because it adds detail to my positive side of sanctuary cities

and how there are fewer crime rates which adds information to my argument.

Press, Associated. “Suspected Serial Rapist Is an Illegal Immigrant Who Drove for Lyft.” New

York Post, New York Post, 18 July 2018, nypost.com/2018/07/18/suspected-serial-rapist-

is-an-illegal-immigrant-who-drove-for-lyft/.
Curtin 5

This is an informational article about how a rapist hacked into lyft, and raped over 4

women. Vilches Lazo raped on 4 different accounts posing as a LyfT driver in San

Francisco, a sanctuary city. Lazo was let off and went unseen in the city.

This article shows how rapists and criminals can hide withing sanctuary cities and pose as

everyday people. The good does not outweigh the bad all the time.

This is important for my essay because it adds information to my argument and shows

how criminals are getting away with crimes due to the cities.

Salter, Alexander W. “Sanctuary Cities, Illegal Immigration, and Crime.” AIER, 1 Apr. 2020,

www.aier.org/article/sanctuary-cities-illegal-immigration-and-crime/.

This article is about how preventing federal agents from detaining immigrants is an

attempt at immigration control. However, this article also talks about “there may be good

arguments to sanctuary cities but that they haven’t heard any yet”. Within this article you

can find the explanation behind ICE and what they feel the immigrants will try to do.

This article explains how ICE is doing their job at detaining immigrants and how there is

a rise in crime within the sanctuary cities.

This article is important to my essay because it shows how officials are worrying about

the crime and how the cities are not as beneficial as believed to be.

“Sanctuary Policies: An Overview.” American Immigration Council, 21 Oct. 2020,

www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/sanctuary-policies-overview.

This article goes over the policies that are placed within the sanctuary cities. Like the U -

visa policies which make it easier for crim victims to obtain documents from agencies.
Curtin 6

This article also goes over the policies about restricting local police responses to federal

immigration detainers, and how policies refuse to allow ICE into local jails without

warrants.

This article allows the policies to be surfaced and to elaborate on how police and law

enforcement is restricted by them. Without these policies immigrants woulndt be safe

within the sanctuary cities.

This benefits by article by showing a positive outcome for the immigrants and how police

have to act in those jurisdictions. This allows my essay to hold more information about

the benefits of the cities.

Shoichet, Catherine E. “Florida Just Banned Sanctuary Cities. At Least 11 Other States Have,

Too.” CNN, Cable News Network, 14 June 2019,

www.cnn.com/2019/05/09/politics/sanctuary-city-bans-states/index.html

This article showcases how Florida banned Sanctuary Cities and how immigrants and the

population is responding. Not only Florida but 11 other sates have jumped on the

bandwagon in banning the cities. Critics say that sanctuary policies endanger public

safter and by passing the bill to ban them allows more opportunity for Americans.

This article explains the steps that the 11 states and Florida are taking to ban sanctuary

cities and how banning them is beneficial to our economy.

This source is important to my article because it allows more information into my

argument and gives a sense of urgency to the need to ban the cities.

Wong, Tom K. “The Effects of Sanctuary Policies on Crime and the Economy.” Center for
Curtin 7

American Progress, 26 Jan. 2017,

www.americanprogress.org/issues/immigration/reports/2017/01/26/297366/the-effects-

of-sanctuary-policies-on-crime-and-the-economy/

This article explains how the crime and poverty rates are lower in the sanctuary

communities. It is also explained that local and state law enforcement should not be

allows to administer immigrant arrests or be involved in enforcing civil immigration

laws. “The sanctuary jurisdictions analyzed here are defined as counties that ICE has

identified as not willing to accept detainers” (Wong, 12). This article also shows how the

economies tend to be stronger in sanctuary cities.

This article shows how the economies have thrived off sanctuary cities as well as show

how the unemployment rates have dropped with the crime rates. This article is a positive

aspect on sanctuary cities and therefore stands out amongst the rest. It explains how

everyone is acting towards the events of immigration, and how everyone is benefiting.

This article is beneficial to my essay because it allows all the positives to be let out.

Nothing is hidden and it shows how beneficial the sanctuary cities have been towards the

community. From every point this article shows how easily immigrants can be

overlooked, but it allows everyone to take a step back and see how they are benefiting

everyone.
