Exp 3

This document provides instructions for an electronics lab experiment on clipping and clamping circuits using diodes. The objectives are to explore diode applications in these circuits, observe output waveforms, and understand how clipping cuts off signal ends and clamping shifts the DC offset up or down. Students will build clipping and clamping circuits using diodes, capacitors, resistors, and observe input and output waveforms on an oscilloscope to analyze the effects. Safety precautions and pre-lab questions are also provided.

Experiment No. 3

Experiment Name: Clipping and Clamper Circuits

Object: To study the diode applications in a clipping and clamping circuits

Objectives: The student will be able to do the following:

1) This lab experiment explores the applications of the diode.

2) The students observe the result and waveforms output voltage for these circuits.
3) They know & read information about this application diodes sketch the output voltage for
their circuits.
4) They will focus on waveform shaping circuit ( clipper) and on D.C shifting circuit
(clamper)

Apparatus (Materials):

1) Power supply A.C voltage 60Hz, 12 V.

2) Diode 1BH62 or 4 IN4001, Capacitor 10uf & 0.1uf, Resistor 1kΩ &10kΩ.
3) Bread Board connection to fix all components circuit.
4) D.C power supply 5V.
5) Oscilloscope to check and see waveforms for voltage output.
6) Jumper wires to contact each other.

Theory
When observing the circuits one can see that the both the clipping & clamping functions will
occur. Clipping details that the ends of the waveforms become cutoff or clipped. There are
several different cases that are explored in this experiment with respect to clipping. A case of
clipping would occur in the forward active region. For example a diode‘s voltage threshold value
is 0.7V. If one were to apply it across the diode, the clipping would occur at 0.7 since that is its
threshold voltage. By adding a battery, the threshold is raised. Adding a battery next to the diode
will now create a total threshold voltage of 1.7V. Anything less than that threshold value will
pass right through, thus resulting no clipping occurring.

Clipping circuit

When introducing a capacitor into the circuit clamping occurs. This essentially shifts the D.C
offset up or down depending on the direction of the diode. As we will see when testing circuits
with different capacitances, forward active mode will determine whether there will be a full shift
or if the circuit will be partially scaled down. The direction of the diode will also determine
whether there will be positive or negative shift on the y axis.
Procedures

a) Clipping circuit
1) Connect the clipper circuit as given diode and resistors.
2) The power supply A.C and power D.C for clipper circuit.
3) Take result output voltage connects with oscilloscope on load resistor.
4) Draw all waveforms input voltage and output voltage without &with capacitor.
5) Determine voltage and the time for output voltage.

b) Clamper circuits
1) Connect the clamping circuits given as diode, capacitor, and resistor.
2) Observe & sketch input & output waveform with shift D.C position.

Result

Precaution
1) All electronic components should be checked before use the apparatus..
2) All connections should be checked.
3) Always connect GROUND first & then Vcc.
4) After completing the experiment switch off the supply to apparatus.

Pre-Experimental Questions
1) Discussion practical result obtains in clipping and clamping circuits?
