Inside or Outside
Jenny and Alice are sitting in the sitting room. It is
cold outside. Snow covers the fields.
“What shall we do today?” Alice asks.
“We can play video games,” Jenny suggests. She
looks at the plastic guitar by the TV. “Let’s play the
music game.”
“I don’t know,” Alice says. “Why don’t we play
outside?”
Alice’s phone rings. She reads the text message
on the screen.
“Do you want to play hockey?” Alice asks Jenny.
“Tommy needs two more players for his team.”
“That’s a great idea!” Jenny replies.
The girls go to the garage and get their helmets, skates, and hockey sticks. Then they go to the lake.
Tommy is happy to see them. “Thanks for coming,” he says.
Jenny puts on her helmet. It is hard but it is light. “Let’s go!” she shouts.
Jenny has the ball. The goal is in front of her. She moves her stick from one side to the other. She
shoots.
“Goal!” they all shout.
The game ends. Tommy is happy.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Dave turned off the alarm clock. He pressed a
button on the computer by his bed and looked at his
schedule for the day. He had forty-five minutes to
get ready and report to his new school. He wished
he was going to his old school back on Earth.
Dave’s dad was the new dentist on the
intergalactic space station. It wasn’t an easy job.
Some of the aliens had teeth fifteen centimeters long.
Sam went into the kitchen. The table was set for
breakfast. There was a text message on the kitchen
screen from his mom. It said: “I went out to get the translators. See you later.” This was not good news.
The translators fit into your ear and translate more than 5,000 languages into English.
Dave entered the third-grade classroom and nervously looked around. He was the only human in the
class. Dave sat down. Then, a long sticky tongue began to lick his ear. Dave screamed. He looked at the
big green monster beside him.
That was two years ago. Now, Dave and Harborg are best friends.

A Special Trip
Last weekend we went on a trip to visit my
grandparents. They live far away so we don’t often
visit them.
Grandpa keeps bees. He has three hives in a field
next to the house. I have always wanted to help him
collect the honey and last weekend he let me.
“Before we collect the honey, Sophie, we have to
prepare,” he told me.
First, we packed some jars in. They were for the
honey. Next, we put on protective clothes. We wore
special hats that had nets to keep out the bees and
other bugs.
Then Grandpa showed me how to work the smoke
machine. The smoke is important. It keeps the bees
calm. If the bees get excited, they eat all the honey
and then fly away. Finally, we went to the hives.
“It is important not to be afraid,” Grandpa said. “Bees respond to your feelings. If you are calm, then
they are calm.”
I worked the smoke machine and Grandpa put the honey in the jars. We collected four jars of honey.
When we got back, Grandma served us tea and toast in the garden. I put honey on my toast. It was
delicious.

A Presentation
I want you to prepare a presentation about an animal of
your choice,” Mr. Hoskins told the class. “Work in teams of
three.”
Henry looked at Toby and then they both looked at
Cindy.
“We can do it on Saturday,” Cindy suggested.

That Saturday they met at Toby’s house.
“First we have to choose an animal,” Henry said.
“I know,” Toby said. “Let’s do bats.”
“That’s a good idea,” Cindy said. “Ok. Next, what do we know about bats?”
“They like dark places, so they live in caves,” Toby said.
“They eat bugs,” Henry added.
“Turn on the computer. We can find out more on the Internet,” Cindy said.
The team watched a video about bats.
“That’s interesting,” Toby said. “Bats can’t see very well so they use radar. They see with their ears.”
Finally, the team made a poster about bats. They put lots of interesting information and added photos.
“It’s time for your presentations,” Mr. Hoskins said. “Who wants to go first?”
“Do you have the poster?” Toby asked Cindy.
Cindy looked in her pack, but it wasn’t there. “I left it at home,” she said. Mr. Hoskins showed a

A Strange Dream
After three days in bed, Sam felt better. His stomach didn’t
hurt any more. Maybe it was the steak he ate. It tasted a
bit funny.
“School tomorrow,” his mom said.
Now Sam had to study. He had missed three exams and
now he had to take them all at once. Math was easy; he
liked numbers. History was easy, too. However, Science
was difficult.
But first he would practice the piano. His hands flew
over the keys as he played.
After half an hour, Sam went back to his books. He
wrote all the important information on a piece of paper.
It was late and Sam was tired. He went to bed and was soon fast asleep. That night Sam had a strange
dream. He dreamed he was flying over the school on a piano. He looked down and saw a herd of cows
playing a game of soccer. Then a Science book flew past and told him to study. Then Sam woke up.
“What a weird dream,” he thought. He looked at the clock. Then he reached for the paper. He still had

The Magic Bridge
The cruise ship sailed into the harbor. Ducks swam
around the ship. The tourists stood on the deck.
Dragonflies and other insects flew around their
heads. The tourists could see the great cathedral
high above the city. There was a piano factory
near the harbor. A big sign advertised the pianos.
On the sign, a famous musician played the piano.
The musician had a big smile on her face.
The ship sailed towards a bridge. The bridge
sparkled in the sunshine. “It’s good luck to pass
under this bridge,” the captain of the ship said.
As the big ship passed under the bridge,
something amazing happened. Everything
changed. It was like a dream. Now, a happy cow

And you could hear the music. The cathedral had disappeared and now there was a fairytale castle there.

The Animal World of Adventures
By Albert Broomfield

Last weekend, The Animal World of Adventures celebrated their anniversary. They have now been open
for five years.
The Animal World of Adventures isn’t a zoo. It is like a safari park. Wild animals roam around their
enclosures in their natural environment. There are a lot of different wild animals. There are lions, giraffes,
zebras, and monkeys. Visitors can see the animals from their cars.
There were many new attractions on this special occasion. Visitors could go into the animal hospital. I
went in and talked to the chief vet, Dr. Jaqueline Smith. “We take care of the sick animals here,” she told
me. “We give them medicine and help them recover.”
Another attraction was the monkey race. Monkeys lined up at the bottom of five high poles. The first
monkey to get to the top of its pole wins the race. There were delicious treats at the top of the poles. A
trainer blew a whistle and the monkeys climbed the poles. I thought it was a lot of fun.
I think that everyone enjoyed the celebration. It was the best day out ever!

The 2020 State Fair
By Albert Broomfield
Governor Brown opened the 2020 State Fair
on Wednesday. It will be open for the next two
weeks.
I love the state fair. I have come every year
since 1982. There really is something for
everyone. Farmers from all over the state bring
their best and biggest fruit, vegetables, and
animals. Sam West won the prize for the biggest
pig. His pig weighed more than 500 kilos.
There is a bull riding competition for brave
cowboys and horse races for the cowgirls. There
is also a competition for dogs. Dog owners train
their dogs especially for this event. The dogs run
around an obstacle course. The dog with the
fastest time wins the prize.
There are lots of rides to choose from. I don’t like the fast rides as they make me feel sick. I think the Ferris
wheel is the best ride. You can see the whole city from the top.
There are also hundreds of people selling their art and produce. You can buy anything from handmade
furniture and blankets to natural medicine and delicious food.
This is the best state fair I have been to.

Sea Love
by Henrietta Long
The Grimm brothers say that Little Mermaid lived
in the sea with her father, the sea king. When she
turned fifteen, he let her swim up to see the world
above. She saw a prince on a ship and started to
feel something–it was love! There was a storm at
sea. His ship sank. She saved him, but a waitress
who worked nearby found him on the shore.
The prince didn’t know that he was saved by the
mermaid.
Wanting to see him again, she went to see the
sea witch.
“I love him. I want to be human,” she said.
The witch told her she could have legs if she
gave up her voice and mermaid song.
She agreed and left her wet palace to walk on
dry land. They met again on the beach. The prince loved to watch her dance. Dancing was painful and
made her feet bleed. They spent time together even though she was quiet.
The prince loved the girl who found him on the beach. The mermaid’s heart was broken.
The witch told the Little Mermaid: “Forget about the prince and you will become a mermaid again.”

The Annoying Frog
by Cesar Russell
I was playing with my golden ball in the garden. It
fell in a well, so I started to cry. I felt devastated.
“Oh, princess, do not cry a river of tears,” said a
little voice.
I couldn’t believe it. The voice was coming from
a small, hideous frog.
“Go back to the river!” I told it at once.
“Oh, dearest princess, I can retrieve your ball.”
He seemed to be telling the truth.
“I can give you this ring I’m wearing,” I said.
“Oh, I do not want your jewels. I want to live in
your house. I want you to love me.”
I couldn’t believe it. How dare he? He was so
slimy and wet. I didn’t want him near me, but I was a great actress. So, I said: “Sure. Why not? Now, get
my ball!”
He brought me my ball and I ran back to the castle as fast as I could.
That night, we were having dinner when he knocked on the door.
The Queen, my mother, said, “Oh my, who is this?”
I said, “Oh, him… We met in the garden.”

Surprise in the Sky
Last May, my family and I drove in California.
Most of it was boring, so I slept a lot in the
car. I’m so glad I was awake to see the condor!
Everyone in my family said it was ugly. I don’t
think so. It flew as gracefully as a kite without
moving its wings. It was just flying in circles up
in the mountains. Unlike vultures and many
other birds, they don’t have a sense of smell,
so they follow other birds to find things to eat.
They can go without food for a few days or up
to two weeks. Then they eat a lot!
I read about them. It’s the largest land bird
in North America. It lives in places with warm
weather. The biggest condor ever seen had
wings that were three meters from tip to tip! Almost all condors live more than 50 years. That’s a lot older
than my parents!
They might not be the most beautiful bird, but they are very clean. They can spend hours bathing and
cleaning their feathers.

Summer Adventures
I always thought summers were boring, but this
summer, I wish it would never end. I’ve been
swimming most days, and sometimes I sleep
next to the pool. I also learned how to fly a
kite. Grandpa showed me once. I learned
quite a few things this vacation. Probably my
favorite thing was making a chocolate cup
with a balloon. It’s perfect to eat ice cream
out of! So, you just blow up a balloon. Then
you melt chocolate and you dip the balloon
in the chocolate. When the chocolate is cool
and hard, you pop the balloon. There you
have a beautiful round bowl that you can eat
at the end! Most kids get chocolate, but my
favorite flavor is mint. Grandma bought a very big tub and lets me have some for lunch every day.
Oh, how could I forget? We also found two baby birds under a tree. They fell out of their nest, so we kept
them safe in a box and fed them until their wings grew strong enough to fly. I was sad when they left, but also
happy that they could be free again. As most of the birds that fly away, they never came back.

A man and his wife owned a shop. They had a
golden ring. It was lucky, but they didn’t know.
They sold it and they became poor. Soon it was
winter, and there was no fire wood. They had a
loyal cat and a dog.
“It’s so cold,” said the dog. “Look at all the
snow,” said the cat.
“We need to help save the shop,” said the dog.
They had a clever plan. First, the dog swam
across a river and the cat stood on his back. Then,
the cat caught a mouse. It went inside the house and chewed through a wooden box where the ring was. The
mouse gave the ring to the cat.
“Now we can move to the beach,” said the dog.
“Somewhere with warm weather away from water,” said the cat. They went back home, but the cat was
faster, since it could climb.
When they saw the cat with the ring: “Oh, thank you! You brought the ring. You are a star!” When the dog
came back, they shouted at the dog: “Why didn’t you help get the ring silly dog?”
From that day the cat and the dog were enemies.

The Magic Mirror
A kind king was looking for a wife. His barber helped him find the right woman.
He announced that he had a magic mirror. If a woman looked in it, her
mistakes would be shown as spots.
None of the woman in the palace wanted to look in the mirror. They
were dressed in perfect, expensive skirts, but they thought they
would see too many spots.
Summer turned into fall, and fall turned into winter. Still there was
no woman brave enough to look into the mirror.
The king spoke to the barber. “How will I ever find
a wife?”
“You won’t find her here,” said the barber, “her
heart needs to be as pure as the silver moon.”
So, the barber went to the mountains. He found a young woman looking after sheep. She wore an old torn
blouse and skirt. She had long, black beautiful hair that had never been cut.
He took her back into the crowded palace.
“I have no gold, only sheep. I have made mistakes, but I’m not scared to look into the mirror.”
She held the mirror and there were no spots.
“We’ve been tricked!” cried all the other women, “it’s not magic.”
