Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Lesson Title:
Which is Bigger? And Which is Smaller?
Objectives:
Students will be able to compare numbers from 0 to 999,999 using comparison symbols.
Students will be able to identify which numbers are bigger and smaller.
State Standards:
3.NSBT.5 Compare and order numbers through 999,999 and represent the comparison using the
symbols >, =, or <.
Context:
This lesson is a 3rd grade math lesson on comparing and ordering numbers. I am teaching this
lesson because it is very important for students to understand these concepts sooner rather than
later. What comes before this lesson is understanding what it means when a number is bigger or
smaller or equal. This lesson will introduce the symbols needed to represent if a number is bigger
or smaller. This would be the end of the larger unit. The next standard is going into fractions.
Data:
Some students might already have an understanding of what the symbols for comparison mean
so the lesson prior students will fill an exit ticket out. I will tell the students to use the symbol
best reflected with the numbers and tell the students if they do not know it, that it is okay we will
learn tomorrow. Then the students with a little understanding will be grouped and the other
students will be grouped.
Materials:
Notebook, pens/penicils, white board, dry erase markers, iPads/tablets, website:

lesson, worksheet
Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
I would have the students sit down and I would handout the worksheet that has the problems we
will be doing on them. I would have the students take out their pens and notebooks and get ready
for the lesson. I will start the power-point with the lesson teaching my students what each
symbol means and when they would use it. After the lesson and some practice. I will explain
each station and what the groups are. Then I would remind everyone of the rules for working
independently and in groups. And I would send them to their stations.
Teacher Directed (10 minutes):
In this station, the students will have a whiteboard and dry erase marker. I will say 2 numbers
and they will write the symbol on their whiteboard, and then flip it over at the same time so
everyone thinks on their own and I ca check everyone. After this activity. I will have the students
come up with their own examples of each symbols, and I will check each child examples. After
this activity say 2 number and students will have to choose which is the larger number or smaller
number. I will then ask the kids if they have any questions and address them. After this the
students will rotate groups.
Collaborative (10 minutes):
In this station the students will work together to put the correct symbol with the correct
statement. For example, there will be statements on a whiteboard and student will have to work
together to write in <,>, or = to make them true statements. After a couple of these. On another
whiteboard, there will be already filled out statements and students will work together to decide
if they are true or false statements.
Independent Digital (10 minutes):
In this station, students will take out their iPads and go to the google classroom. On the classes
google classroom, there will be a link for a comparing number game
(https://www.abcya.com/games/comparing_number_values). In this game students will select
whole numbers and they can choose their level of difficulty depending on how confident they
feel. The game ends when the student gets 5 correct in a row. At the end their score is in the top
right. Students have to play until they get at least 85% correct. If they are struggling a lot I will
inform them to go down a level difficulty. If the student finishes with over 85% and barely
anytime passes, then they will be instructed to play again at a higher difficulty. Once they get
over 85% they have to screenshot that and submit it to google classroom.
Closure (10 minutes):
At this time I will call the students back to their desks. I will do a quick review on what we
learned. At this time I will show the greater, less than song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
feature=share&v=3qisu9NF1_0&app=desktop,). I will then ask if any students gave questions
about what we learned. I will go over the homework and pass out an exit slip to see if the
students actually understand the topic.
Rationale:
Comparing Number Values Game:
This is a good piece of multi-media because it gives the students a fun way to practice the skills
they learned. This supports student learning and the standards because it helps the student
improve comparing number with comparison symbols. This is a high quality game. It gets a high
rating on LORI eight evaluation dimensions. For example this game gets a high rating for
motivation because it offers appropriate difficulty levels. This differentiate instruction for all
learners because of the levels of difficulty you can choose.
Greater Then, Less Then Song
This song is a good piece of multimedia because it gives the kids something fun to watch and
listen to but learn at the same time. It is high quality because it has a higher rating on the LORI
eight evaluation dimensions. For example, it scores high on presentation design because it
integrates video and audio media that is appropriate for the content. This song is meant for all
learners because it does not involve them doing any work.
