“Whether you are aware or not, you listen or read information from
everyday walks of life. Either formal or informal ways, pieces of information

you crave to know and learn about. ”

Review: Looking Back to Your Lesson!

During your lower grades in Junior High, you already developed your
reading and listening skills in recognizing main/key ideas. Once the ideas
were recognized, you can organize them through an outline. You already
learned that outline has two kinds/types, the sentence, and the topic outline.

Directions: Read the excerpt of informative text below and organize the
ideas in a topic outline. Remember that only phrases are used in this kind of
outlining.

Why Don’t Teenagers and Young Adults Regularly Get Enough

Sleep?
Several factors contribute to lack of sleep in adolescence and
young adulthood…Little is known about the influences on sleep among
young adults. Factors known to affect adolescents often occur
simultaneously, and include: hormonal time shifts and early school
start times; hectic after-school schedule; leisure activities; light
exposure from televisions, mobile phones, and computers; vicious
cycle; social attitudes; and sleep disorder.

Motivation: Self-learning!
Most of us know that having enough sleep is vital to our health. In the
transcript of the Informative Talk you are about to read as you progress in
this lesson, you will gain a deeper understanding of how to value your
healthy sleeping routine. Having enough sleep is really important. However,
not all of us practice good sleeping habits. There are several reasons why
every individual is indifferent to having enough sleep. These give rise to
several unhealthy effects.

Directions: Activate your schema by filling in the chart below with the
effects of having poor sleeping habits in one’s everyday living.
Effects of Poor Sleeping
Habits

Discussion: Learn About It!

The primary purpose of Informative Talk is to inform. When you listen
or read a transcript of a certain Informative Talk, you get acquainted with
information you did not know yet, or you learn more about a topic with
which you are already familiar.

An Informative Talk is used to explain an idea, a process, an object,

or an event.
There are four primary types of Informative Talk.
1. Definitional −This explains the meaning of concepts, theories,
philosophies, or issues that may be unfamiliar to the audience. It
gives the historical derivation, classification, or synonyms of terms or
the background of the subject.

Example:
In a speech about “The Nature of Racism”, you can get
information about: Where did the word „racism‟ come from? What is
racism? What countries around the world is racism evident? What are
the effects of racism in society?

ISCAG School 9
English 10 MODULE 1: Lesson 4

2. Descriptive − This offers information that provides a detailed, vivid, word

picture of a person, animal, place, or object. The audiences carry away in
their minds a clear vision of the subject. It determines the characteristics,
features, functions, or fine points of the topic.

Example:
In describing Kayangan Lake in Coron, Palawan, you can gain
information about: What makes Kayangan Lake unique? What
adjectives you can apply to the subject? How does it compare to similar
lakes?
3. Explanatory (also known as briefing) − It is similar to the descriptive talk
in that they both share the function of clarifying the topic. However,
Explanatory focuses on reports of current and historical events, customs,
transformations, inventions, policies, outcomes, and options. It focuses on
the why and how of a subject and its consequences.

Example:
When the COVID-19 pandemic has posed a great threat to human
lives, you search for information that would explain: When and where
this virus started? What are its symptoms? How could we prevent it
from spreading? What is the possible cure or vaccine?
4. Demonstration – This type of Informative Talk shows how some process
is accomplished or how to perform it.

Examples:
- Chronological explanation of some process (how chiffon cakes are made)
- Procedure (how to install a software in your computer)
- Application (how to use an appliance)
- A course of Action (how court cases proceed to Supreme Court status)

 LET’S PRACTICE

Activity 4.1: Tune In

Directions: Listen/watch an informative talk about the importance of sleep
as shown in the video “Importance of Sleep” available at
https://youtu.be/iZc4n8Bwa7A . If, on the other hand, you do not have
internet access, read below the transcript of the informative talk already
provided for you.

Importance of Sleep
According to Scientific American March 25th, 2002, 17-year old Randy
Gardner in 1965 set an all-time world record all for a science fair project as
part of sleep deprivation experiment by staying awake for 264 hours. That is
11 days. The first day, his eyes had stopped focusing. Later he lost the
ability to recognize objects by touch. He became moody and uncoordinated.
At the end of his experiment, he had trouble with concentration, short-term
memory, became paranoid, and started hallucinating. Gardner recovered
with no mental or physical damage.
You see, getting the right amount of sleep can make a big difference in
a person’s life. Today, I’m going to talk to you about how much sleep a
person really needs and why we need sleep.
You might be wondering right now how much sleep do we really need.
Well, sleep requirement vary by individuals. The sleepfoundation.org of 2017
recommends falling sleep requirements. Adults need 7-8 hours sleep at
night, whereas adolescents need 10 hours. There are few sleep inducing
chemicals that play part in sleeping. The rise and sleep induced chemicals
such as andesine and melatonin put a person into a light sleep making our
breathing and our heart rate slow down as well as our muscles to relax. This
is when DNA is repaired and our body is refreshed, happening during the
nonrapid eye movement or NREM sleep.
You may be thinking, why do we need sleep and so much of it? Well
here are few pointers that will change your mind about the importance of
sleep.
Sleeping comes with physical and mental significant benefits. For
example, sleeping is a building process. It restores the body’s energy
supplies that have been depleted throughout our daily activities. Getting the
right amount of sleep, our body rebuilds and restores our muscles that we
have by secreting a growth hormone. mbcnews.com of 2013 says, “spending
all day long thinking and creating takes up a lot of our mental energy. When
we sleep we restore mental energy too. Just like our phones. You need them
to be plugged in to reach their full mode of battery at the end of the day, we
need to be recharged as well. Liz Miller, the director of Bethel Health
Services, stresses constant sleep deprivation will greatly affect your ability to
retain information which affects your grades which then leads to stress.

ISCAG School 11
English 10 MODULE 1: Lesson 4

Along with several other harmful consequences that David Wolf of

2017 states, for example, One, sleep deprivation causes you to become
more aggressive, deteriorating your inner personal responses, and making
you get upset easily. Secondly, it also weakens your immune system causing
you to have a higher risk of catching a cold or illness. It will cause you to
gain weight by raising levels of biochemical appetite stimulant. Lack of sleep
will increase type 2 diabetes and raise your blood pressure. Not getting
enough sleep can impair your brain activity by blocking neuron production
which increases to stress levels. Sleep deprivation leads to memory loss by
deteriorating the brain. And lastly, getting the improper amount of sleep will
increase the risk of cancer.
Now that you are more aware when it comes to sleeping, you now
know about how much sleep is enough and why we need sleep. And as you
can see, getting the right amount of sleep can make a big difference in a
person’s life. Overall, getting a good night's rest is the right thing to do in
order to be successful and succeed as a college student. Sleep is not an
option. It is of extreme importance; make it a priority, according to Liz
Miller, the director of Bethel Health Services. And just remember, save
yourself and get some sleep.
