MOUNTING GUIDELINES OF SEALS

1. GENERAL GUIDELINES

Mounting of seals provides their leakproofness and duration of life cycle. It should be
executed with the obligatory performance of the requirements below:
• Before the instalation of sealing elements all the the interfaced water-engineering
system details should be cleaned from the pollution, shaving and other debris, blown with
compressed air and greased with working fluid.
• Sharp details edges should be rounded, as during the instalation the seals can contact
with them.
• On the end of the sleeve or the rod should be a chamfer. Its sizes are shown in each
seal type description. The edge in the place of transition from the facet to the sliding surface
should be rounded and polished.
• It is forbidden to stretch or push the seals through the sharp grooves, openings,
carving edges during mounting etc.
• Auxiliary attachments applying at mounting should be made of the soft material, that to
prevent seal damage, and also correspond to the seal type and size.

2. MOUNTING OF SEALS

Seal mounting can be carried out in the opened and closed grooves.
It is recommended to mount the seals of small size with the diameter up to 50 mm
in the opened groove. This type of installation is carried out manually and as a rule is not
difficult.
The installation of elastic seals in the closed groove can be carried out manually.
Using of two synthetic tapes passed under a sealing element (pic. 1) allows to make
mounting process easier.

Pic. 1

The installation of low-elastic seals on the integral pistons should be carried out with
the help of special mounting equipment (pic. 2).
During the installation of the two-component seals, first of all manually it should be
mounted the rubber ring. Twisting of ring is not allowed. The sealing ring is stretched through
oiled conical mandrel with the help of expanding collet barrel (plastic petal glass) till the hit in
the landing of piston groove.

This method provides easeness, correctness and reliability of installation. For
exception of possibility of rupture, sealing rings made of the material with fluoroplastic, should
be heated preliminarily.

3. MOUNTING OF ROD SEALS

Mounting of rod seals is carried out in the opened and closed grooves as well as the
piston seals mounting.
In the opened groove it is recommended to install the seals with the outer diameter
less than six-eightfold value of cross-section thickness. Such installation is possible without
using attachments. MPU/2S seals install only in the opened groove.
Seal installation in the closed groove is carried out with use of a suitable mandrel and
cap, made of plastic (pic.3). Firstly the seal installs manually on the one side of the groove,
then it moves ahead by mandrel till the fully installation.
During the installation of two-component seals at first the rubber ring must be inserted
without twisting. Only then the cross-sectional seal ring can be installed.
The application of special nippers make the process
of installation of rod seals easier (pic.4). The nippers help to Mandrel
compress the seal to the kidney form before to the installation
in the groove. The diameter of fingers on nippers should
not be less (0,15-0,2) diameters of a rod that to prevent the sharp
seal excesses.

After the seal installation it is necessary to calibrate it with the special mandrel by the sizes,
surface quality and existence of facet, completely repeating the hydraulic cylinder rod. The
mandrel should be oiled with small turning in both sides. It should be inserted into the seal on
the side of low pressure and should be stretched through it.

SEALS STORAGE

The influence of such factors as ozone, oxygen, oils, solvents, light, heat can make
physical properties of seals worse. That is why it should be adhered the next storage rules:
Temperature: up to 25 °C. At more high temperatures aging happens quicker. At low
temperature the seals harden.
Humidity: It should be avoided very dry or very humid rooms.
Oxygene, ozone, light: seals should be protected from the solar radiation, strong
artificial light and from the circulating air.
Storage container: Air-tight plastic bags (dark color is better).

CAUSES OF SEALS FAILURES

1. Misfit of seal form and amount to form and sizes of a seat.

2. The seal damage during the installation in the seat (crumpled working edges, chips,
ruptures, scratches) because of the low-quality assembly tool and non-compliance with
requirements to the facets and limited radius of rod seal bend.
3. Twisting of seal or rubber rings in the groove.
4. Hit under the seals of particles of pollution because of bad cleaning of details from
shaving, flashes, paint and other mud particles, getting through the wiper or from low-quality
working liquid.
5. Wrong orientation of rod and piston seals in the seats.
6. Misfit of seat sizes and roughnesses to the demanded values and also presence
of microdefects such as scratches, dents, cracks, collapse of chromic coat on the working
surfaces.
7. The increase of superadmissible of rod and piston backlash in their wear elements.
8. Incompatibility of seal materials and working liquid or environment (increased
swelling, weakening or decomposition).
9. Excess of admissible temperatures of seals heating, for example, during colouring
of hydraulic cylinder.
10. Excess of admissible working pressure of working liquid for the given seal
construction and its mounting place.
11. Misfit of quality of surface, sizes and seals materials to the requirements of design
documentation.
12. Seals damage because of violation of requirements for storage and transportation.

REQUIREMENTS TO THE PLACES OF SEALS INSTALLATION
Operational seals properties (leakproofness, smoothness of sliding, minimum friction
forces, non-failure operation, life cycle) depends upon accuracy and quality of seats
performance and diameters of the interfaced couple of back and forth motions.

To the main factors of reliability of seals work are:

1. GROOVE SIZES AND CONFIGURATION

Necessary data in this parameters are given in the descriptions each seal type.

2. DEVIATIONS OF FORM AND SURFACES ARRANGEMENT

Out of roundness of surfaces of the interfaced couples (cylinder-piston, rod-axle box)

should be within the admission on the relevant diametrical sizes, and the run-out of grooves
surfaces for the seals to the basic sealing surfaces should not exceed 0,05.. .0,10 mm. The
run-out of grooves surfaces for the support-guide rings should not exceed 0,03 ...0,05 mm.

3. CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE SURFACES OF SEALED DETAILS

Appointing a clearance, it is necessary to observe two main requirements:

a) clearance amount between the sealing surfaces should prevent possibility of their metal
contact piece (minimum allowable clearance);
b) at the same time, to prevent the sealing expression and its extrusive wear and collapse
on the side, which is not under pressure, the clearance size has not to be bigger than certain
value (maximum allowable clearance).
Assuming, that cylinder and rod diameters are given, formulas for calculation of diameters
of reciprocal details are given below (piston, axle box), where the seats are made specially for
the wear-sealing elements. Settlement scheme (pic. 5).

RINGROUP 151
3.1. Providing of minimum admissible clearance δmin ≥0.
For rod seal knot Da min ≥ Dg max - 2Smin + 0,5Jb,
where Dg max = Dg+ ES(Dk);
Dg - face value of groove diameter for wear ring in the axle box;
ES(Dg)- upper maximum deviation Dg;
Smin = S-ei(S)-∆S;
S - face value of wear ring thickness;
ei(S) - absolute value of the lower maximum deviation S;
∆S - allowable wear of wear ring during the operation;
Jb - radial runout Dg concerning Da .
For piston seal knot
Dp max ≤ Dg min + 2Smin - 0,5 Jp,
where Dg min = Dg- ei(Dg);
Dg - face value of groove diameter for wear ring on the piston;
ei(Dg ) - absolute value of the lower maximum deviation Dg;
Value Smin is defined as well as for rod seal knot.
Jp - radial runout Dg concerning Dp.

It should be noted, that size of minimum clearance is defined by eminence of wear ring
over the surface Da (Dp) and does not depend upon the diameter dr (Ds) of the reciprocal detail
of the interfaced couple.

3.2. Providing of maximum allowable clearance δmax

Maximum allowable clearance δmax is defined by operating pressure and is given in the
tables of the place of installation of each seal type, considering the seal material.
Considering the excess inadmissibilities of this clearance, the formula for definition Da
max
in the rod seal knots can be written like:

Da max ≤ dr min + 2δmax – ƒb max – Jb ,

where dr min = dr – ei(dr);
dr - face value of rod diameter;
ei(dr) - absolute value of the lower maximum deviation dr;
ƒb max - maximum backlash in the coupling of rod and wear ring;

ƒb max = Dg max – 2S min – dr min

Calculation modes Dk max, S min are given in 3.1.

Jg radial runout Dg concerning Da.
Formula for definition Dp min in the rod seal knot is:

Dp min ≥ Ds max – 2δmax – ƒp max – Jp

where Ds max = Ds +ES(Ds);

Ds - face value of piston sleeve;

ES(Ds) - upper maximum deviationDs;

ƒp max = Ds max – Dg min – 2S min

Calculation modes Dg min, S min are given in 3.1.
Jp - radial runout Dg concerning Dp.

Note.
Admissions of diameters of interfaced details and seats for the wear-seal elements are
given in the tables of the places of seals installation. Other values of design variable can be
equal:
- design variable Dg concerning Da(Dp) - 0,05 mmm;
- lower deviation of supporting rings thickness - 0,1 mm;
- permissible wear of wear rings ∆S - 0,05 mm.

4. SURFACE QUALITY OF SLEEVE, ROD

Processing frequency of sleeve and rod surfaces defines reliability and durability of seals
work.
Optimal value of a roughness is Ra 0,1 ... 0,2. Surface roughness Ra 0,4 is maximum
permissible. Reduction of roughness under Ra 0,05 is inexpedient economically and unjustified
technically, because the volume of microchambers filled with oil on the sealing surface
decreases and the adhesive component of friction increases.
Character of surface microrelief, determined by a processing method, has an importance.
Microroughnesses should have smooth rounding of tops, that is reached by roller expansion
or burnishing and is characteristic for the smooth surfaces. Sharp microroughnesses, which
are peculiar to opaque surfaces after grinding and a rough honing, promote for fast seals
depreciation.
Hardness of material of a rod and the cylinder should be sufficient to exclude the
emergence longitudinal scratches from the abrasive particles of pollution and friction in
support.
Sleeves of cylinders are usually made of the improved steel and have hardness НB
240... 285.
Rods should have hardness not under HRC 45 and should be protected from corrosion
by firm chromium plating with layer thickness at least 24 microns.

5. USED OIL QUALITY

Sealing elements can be used in the mineral oils (DIN 51524), nonflammable hydraulic oils
(VDMA 24317 or DIN24320) air and water.

RINGROUP 153
CONTROL METHODS OF SEATS
Reliability of work and seals service life depend not only upon the quality of handling of surfaces
of the sealing details,but also upon the subtleties of accomplishment and roughness of surfaces of
the seats of wear-sealing elements. Extent of sealing is defined by purity of the surfaces contacting
with sealings and is reached by filling of all microroughnesses and defects with sealing material.
Side surfaces of grooves are recommended to be processed with a roughness
Ra=1,6...3,2 mcm, this surface should not have a purity of coarser Ra=1,6 mcm.
Grooves sizes are appointed taking into account the deformation of sealings and necessary
contact pressure in all service conditions. For control of the grooves size is used both universal and
the specialized measuring tool in the form of lamellar and pith calibers, and also split mortgage rings.
The assessment of a roughness of surfaces can be carried out by means of optical devices
of the contact (profilometers, profilographs) and contactless (microscopes, microinterferometers)
types. Method of comparison of a product surface with standard samples of a roughness is widely
used. Thus standard samples should be made of the same material, as a detail, using the same
methods of machining ( turning, grinding etc). At visual control the correct results turn out only
for roughness class Z-8 surfaces (Ra=1,25…0,63 mcm). Control with the pools help to show
the correct results to the 9th roughness class (Ra=0,32 mcm). During the control with use of a
microscope it is possible to receive the correct results even for surfaces above 9th class of purity.
Mould method can be applied in some cases for hard-to-reach spots. It means that
special mix (wax, paraffin, oil percha) made according to a certain recipe, put to a surface of
the measured detail with efforts. After mix stiffens, it can be separated from the surface easily
and reminds all its roughnesses and cross-section. Having measured the roughness of mold
surface, it is possible to determine the parameters of a roughness of the checked surface. The
best results of reproducibility are shown by molds from an oil gutta-percha. Such mix when
heating up to 900C becomes high-plastic, that allows to receive a form of the thinnest profile part.
