skills. Yet
employers tell college administrators that graduates, both from undergraduate and graduate programs, often lack these
skills.
Having read this week's assigned materials, how would you define critical thinking?
Why are employers making these comments? Are they justified – should colleges be responsible for teaching critical
thinking? If not, whose job is it?
Hello, everybody!
I’d define critical thinking as the ability to identify the nature of certain situations according to our values, philosophical
views and general perspectives in order to act consequently.
I’d say that a great example of this is given in our Learning Guide unit 4, referring to elections. (Agos, Samantha (2016,

In this example we could see how important is to scan the needs that pushes a person to vote for a certain candidate,
depending on the proposals the candidate makes to the public. For this purpose, it’s why the voter must ask questions in
order to understand if the proposal fits the need, and if the promises are most likely to be fulfilled.
In separating or deconstructing the proposal, the voter could see the intention, or manipulation behind the candidacy
and be able to give their vote if it follows values and points of views. By using critical thinking, the voter could predict if
the characteristics, values and promises made, are in concordance with the voters thoughts of the needs to be solved.
I think that colleges and the university environment is a perfect place for fostering critical thinking. Some people go to
college and they don’t get involved in social struggles, debates or discussions on important topics, and the university
environment is not only for studying, I’d say, but it also is a minor convivence, in which people’s in touch with other
person’s insights on diverse topics. There’s an encounter of different opinions, values and philosophical views that may
be adverse, but that also generates a contrast. It’s a place for discussion, debating, getting involved in struggles of
different sort, in being in the “arena”, so to speak, will face the student with other sources of information in which the
critical thinking will be advised for choosing the right thing to do.
Dear all,
The text defines stakeholders as: “Individuals and organizations who are actively involved in the organization
or whose interests may be positively or negatively affected as a result of what the organization does.” Every
organization has stakeholders. Identify the possible stakeholders for one of the following firms and discuss their
interest:

Hello, everyone!
Every company must deal with different interested parts that take action in a successful company. These people
or organizations are interested in receiving or giving a satisfactory service to the involved members (or
stakeholders) since a company works also in a symbiotic way in order to grow into success.
In any of the giving cases, there are communities, workers and companies interested in seen their efforts and
support growing in service but also in satisfaction, so, in theory, every company has at least three stakeholders
in which lies the support, but also the expectations of a good labor. These are:
- Costumers
- Employees
- Local communities
- Government
Taking the example of the water utility company there are other participants, depending on the nature of the
company. For example, in Venezuela, -where I come from- the water utility company is under the direction of
the government, or the city mayor. Directions come mostly from a bigger plan that the company must follow
with no hesitation, even though they have the authority inside, to manage the organization policies. Since this is
the nature of the company, -it doesn’t rely on itself, but most always give development reports to a higher
authority- the company’s in obligation to provide a satisfactory service and the full responsibility doesn’t rely
on it entirely.
Although this is a fact, the company must run polls on satisfaction since if not, the full responsibility of
corruption, misadministration and a poor quality of the service, is charged on the city mayor, or the local
government.
The local communities on the other hand, are people living in a shared land with frequent contact, that share the
same problems and insights about the location they live in. These people could -and most likely it does- include
workers and people with jobs in the water supply company.
Therefore, the company wants to be seen as “a good citizen with healthy links to the local community. We want
to be seen as a responsible employer who is providing a good place to work” (Who are a company’s most
important stakeholders?”, (n.d). Retrieved from: https://www.destination-innovation.com/who-are-a-companys-
most-important-stakeholders/)
Employees are a crucial part of the achievement of the company’s goals and objectives. They create, contribute
and help achieving the company’s services. They must be taken into consideration, appreciate their talents and
nurture them in order to create a greater working environment that pushes them into staying and being loyal to
the company.
Costumers are the reasons why a company persists. They’re the services’ consumers, and the ones that test
constantly on the development of the water supply company. In the case of the nature of the company, this
usually means that if there are complaints of a bad services, the city mayor or government will take the fault.
All of these elements participate actively into providing the best quality product as possible. In these kinds of
companies although, the full responsibility and the intervention doesn’t come entirely from the company itself,
but from the local government, which guarantees, not only the quality of the service provided, but also the
correct use of the resources of the company, and supervising that the management direction are following the
objectives set for the well-function of the organization.
