Event/Activity: Virtual Learning Professional Development

Date: November 24, 2020

Describe the event and your participation:

This professional development event was held through my pre-student teaching

placement. On the day before Thanksgiving break, teachers were assigned to this professional

development event to discuss the effectiveness of virtual teaching so far, and they also discussed

what could be done to improve this experience for the students as well as the staff member. This

event was help virtually through Zoom, but it was still such an effective event for me personally.

The principal discussed, with teacher input, how the school year was going with virtual learning.

Since she is not in every room every day, she cannot see everything that goes on, and she cannot

see all of the issues that may be present in some classes. This event included the fifth and sixth

grade teachers only. They had this event for different grade levels at different times. They split it

up so they had the opportunity to focus on one, or two, grades at a time and really learn about the

experiences. I thought this was a good idea because it made it easier to focus on a smaller group

of students. By separating them by grade levels, the principal can learn more about the different

grades and the issues that may be present.

This professional development opportunity was a good experience for me because I

actually got to participate as the pre-student teacher in one of these classrooms. I was able to give

my input and explain what I have been seeing. I also felt appreciated during this event because

my voice was heard and everyone took what I had to say into consideration. It did not matter that

I was not one of the teachers, and they all appreciated my input. This event had an impact on me

because it showed me the importance of communication between teachers and staff, especially

during this time. We need to communicate with one another and reflect on our teaching practices

in order to grow as teachers and become better for our students. The teachers learned from one

another, and they worked together to think of solutions to problems.

In my future classroom, I can take what I learned at this professional development to

become better for my students. I now know the importance of communicating with fellow

teachers to learn and become better in my own classroom. I will constantly talk to the other

teachers and work with them to adjust our teaching if there are any issues. A major part of being

a teacher is being able to reflect on our teaching and adjust for the needs of our students. In being

able to do this, I can make myself better to help my students learn more. I think this professional

development was helpful for me as a future teacher because I got to learn how to appropriately

discuss and reflect on what is happening in our classrooms with other teachers.
