Welcome to the New Abnormal Semester!

Welcome to what promises to be an unusual semester for all of us under the circumstances we
face due to the coronavirus pandemic! And in the “new normal,” here’s a bit of a preamble and
disclaimer about the syllabus.

As we have all experienced throughout 2020, we have learned that “best laid plans” often can
be changed by outside forces we can’t control - and so, we have to adapt. So, while this class
has been designed to provide you with a good learning experience about management, we may
well have to adapt things as events proceed this semester, even though the course has been
constructed mindful of the restrictions, limitations, and yes, challenges that we all face today.
That is the management challenge that lies ahead. Rest assured however that as you review
this course syllabus, your professor will try and work with each and every one of you to help you
learn and succeed in this course.

In a nutshell, we will be making use of a “flipped classroom” approach - where lectures are
pre-recorded and posted online, and the class time will be devoted to problem-solving sessions
in which you can reach out to your professor via Google Meet with any questions/concerns/help
needed, etc. All graded class items - homework/reinforcement activities, chapter quizzes, and
tests - will be taken online using the Connect online learning platform (registration included in
your textbook rental fee). Now, on the next page, we will begin the “normality” of the course
syllabus that we will be working with this term. Good luck and do feel free to reach out to me
with any questions as we go through the semester!

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course is designed as an introduction to

management and an overview of leading
others in private, public, and nonprofit
organizations. As such, it will provide you with
an overview of the many functions managers
must perform and the environment in which
work is done - along with a look at the
changing definition of what “work” is today.

By the end of the semester, you will have a

firm understanding of the role of a manager
within an organization. You will learn about the
science of management by discovering what
researchers have found in relevant fields like
decision making, communication, strategic
management, and human resource
management. We will see how information
technology has impacted organizations and
managerial work, and how IT will be important
in your own career. We will examine how the
internationalization of business and the diversification of the workforce are changing, for
the better, how we work and manage people globally. Furthermore, as we discuss the
findings of researchers who investigate the science of management, we will also
discuss how you can use this information as you practice the art of management. You
will have the opportunity to put these concepts into practice through applied, in-class
discussion questions, along with outside homework in the form of both the quizzes and
the exercises you will complete through the Connect learning platform (required).

GRADE COMPONENTS
Students will be evaluated on the basis of performance in several major areas. The
criteria and the weight/points assigned to each are shown in Table 2 below:

Table 2 – Grading Formula

Assignment Weight Points

Regular Exams 55% 550

6 regular exams - best five count [meaning that you
will drop the lowest one!]). So, the best five exams
each will be worth 11% of course grade

Comprehensive Final Exam 15% 150

Final exam over all 17 chapters, worth 15% of
course grade

Connect: Chapter Quizzes 15% 150

17 quizzes (1 for each chapter of the textbook)

Connect: Homework 15% 150

17 homework assignments + 17 adaptive learning
assignments for each chapter of the textbook

TOTAL 100% 1000 Points

Details about each of these grade categories are provided in the following 3 sections.

REGULAR EXAMS

There will be six regular exams in the course, covering material from the 16 chapters of
the text (with the chapters broken out as outlined in Table 3 on the next page). Since
you will be able to drop the lowest exam score from the six, each exam will be worth
11% of your course grade, or 110 points out of the 1000 total available points in the

course. These regular exams will together be worth 55% of your course grade, or 550
points out of the 1000 total available points in the course.

These tests will be administered in Connect, and with the way the algorithm works on
the learning platform, no two students will see the same exam. You will be free to take
the exam at any time on the day of the exam during the 24 hour exam window (12:01
am to 11:59 p.m. that day). You can take each exam up to 2 times, and the higher score
will be the one that counts for the course.

As for any “late” tests, you should do your best to complete each exam prior to the test
window closing. Otherwise you will need to rely on “The Purge” (more on that later…)
for make-ups to avoid zeros on any missing exams. And again, please consult the
day-by-day course calendar for test dates, which will also be reflected on Connect.

COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM

On the day designated as the final exam day for the course, there will be a
Comprehensive Final Exam. The comprehensive final exam will be just that - covering

material from all seventeen chapters of the text. The final exam will be worth 15% of
your course grade, or 150 points out of the 1000 total available points in the course.

As with the regular exams in this course, the comprehensive final exam will be
administered in Connect, and with the way the algorithm works on the learning platform,
no two students will see the same exam. You will be free to take the comprehensive
final exam at any time on the designated final exam day (again, the window 24 hour
exam window will run from 12:01 am to 11:59 p.m. that day). You can take the

comprehensive final exam up to 2 times, and the higher score will be the one that
counts for the course.

Unlike any other homework/quiz/test assigned in this course, the final exam must be
taken on the final exam day. It cannot be taken early. More importantly, a late/missed
comprehensive final exam would be at the end of the course and the end of the
semester, missing this test would likely mean that you would either have to take a zero
on the final or take an “I” (incomplete) grade for the course and take the exam after the
end of the semester.

CONNECT: CHAPTER QUIZZES

There will be a quiz for each of the 17 chapters to be covered from the Management
text. You can take each chapter quiz as many as three times, and your highest score
will be the one that counts for you. Do your best and beat the deadline for the chapter
work to be completed, otherwise you will need to rely on “The Purge” (more on that
later…) for make-ups to avoid zeros on missing work. Your chapter quiz grade will be
the average grade earned across the 17 units, and this average score will account for
15% of your course grade (or 150 points out of the total 1000 points available for the
class).

10
Course Syllabus - Management 351 - Spring 2021
David C. Wyld, Professor of Management

As for any “late” quizzes, you should do your best to complete each quiz prior to the
deadline for the chapter work to be completed. Otherwise you will need to rely on “The
Purge” (more on that later…) for make-ups to avoid zeros on missing quizzes. And
again, please consult the day-by-day course calendar for due dates, which will also be
reflected on Connect.

CONNECT: REINFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES

For each chapter, there will be two reinforcement activities available on Connect to aid
in your learning of the chapter material - these are the chapter homework (which is a
reinforcement of the textbook concepts) and the adaptive learning assignment based on
the chapter material. I strongly encourage you to do these, as they are great for learning
AND yes, great preparation for the tests! So, cumulatively, all the Chapter Homework
available on Connect will be worth 15% of your course grade (or 150 points out of the
total 1000 points available for the class). Again, as for any “late” work, you should do
your best and beat the deadline for the chapter work to be completed. Otherwise you
will need to rely on “The Purge” (more on that later…) for make-ups to avoid zeros on
missing work. And again, please consult the day-by-day course calendar for due dates,
which will also be reflected on Connect.

“THE PURGE”

During “The Purge” (catchy name, eh?), there will be no late grade penalties for missing
assignments/quizzes from the 17 chapters on the 6 regular exams, and any missing
exam can be taken for full credit as well. Also, “The Purge” is your chance to raise your
grade, as you can redo any homework/adaptive learning and/or retake any quiz or test
from the semester (so long as you have attempts remaining on the quizzes and tests) to
try and score higher! What a country!

12

“The Purge” will be a single day - Thursday, May 6th - the last regular day of classes.
During “The Purge,” all day, from 12:01 a.m. till 11:59 p.m., you can do any missing
work (all homework and quizzes) for full credit. You should not rely on this one day to
complete assignments. However, it is a “last chance” to make-up missing work and
maximize your course grade. Use it to your advantage (just don’t plan on “doing the
entire semester” in this one 24-hour period!

THE POLICY-ESE
For the Spring 2021 Semester, the university is requiring that you not only validate that
you have seen and reviewed this document, the course syllabus, but also read and
acknowledged the University’s Policy Statements, which are linked to on the next page.

● Accommodations for Disability

● Victims of Sexual Misconduct
● E-mail Communication
● Academic Integrity

● Detection of Plagiarism
● Student Behavior/Classroom Decorum
● Children in Classroom
● Important Dates

Additionally, due to the coronavirus pandemic, there may be additional policy

statements that you will need to read, review and acknowledge added by the university
up to and even after the beginning of the semester. These include, but are not limited
to, the university’s:

● Safe Campus Guide

● Face Mask/Coverings Policy
● Student Protocol for COVID-19.

When you got to the Moodle site for this course, you must validate that you have done
both of the activities (the validation of both the Course Syllabus and the Policy
Statements). Failure to do so will prevent you from receiving a grade for this course.
