TLP 18 Equation of A Line
TLP 18 Equation of A Line
A real world set of data can be presented through mathematical models. Working with real-life data,
more often than not, you know information about a line without knowing its equation. You can use
characteristics of the graph of data to write an equation for a line.
II. PRESENTATION
Writing an equation of a line can be done in various ways depending on the information given.
A. Using the Slope- Intercept Form
B. Using Point slope form
C. Using Two-Point Form
D. Using the Intercept Form
Practice!
Try This #1!
Find the equation of the line with the given slope and y-intercept.

B. Using the Point-Slope Form of Linear Equation
You can also write the equation of a line given a point and a slope using the slope – intercept form.
y - y 2 = m(x- x 1) where x ≠ x 1
Example 1
Find the equation of the line passing through (1,-3) with a slope of -6.
Solution:
Using the formula, substitute the given. m = -6, x 1 = 1 and y 2=−3
y - y 2 = m(x- x 1) Formula.
y – (-3) = -6 (x -1) Substitute -3 to y 2, -6 to m and 1 to x 1.
y + 3 = -6x +6 Simplify. Distribute -6 to x-1.
6x +y = 6 – 3 Transpose – 6x to the other side and it will become 6x.
Transpose 3 to the other side and it will become -3.
6x + y = 3 Simplify.
Example 2
Write an equation for the line with a slope of -3 and contains (3,-5).
Solution:
Using the formula, substitute the given. m = -3, x 1 = 3 and y 2=−5
y - y 2 = m(x- x 1) Formula.
y – (-5) = -3 (x -3) Substitute -5 to y 2, -3 to m and 3 to x 1.
y + 5 = -3x +9 Simplify. Distribute -3 to x-3.
3x +y = 9 -5 Transpose – 3x to the other side and it will become 3x.
Transpose 5 to the other side and it will become -5.
3x + y = 4 Simplify.
