Notes About This Catalog

 Wherever escalator types are shown, the standard escalator of that type is
assumed unless otherwise specified. For example, “J” means J escalators,
whereas “J Escal-Aire®” is used to indicated that specific sub-type.

 Most measurements are provided in both Imperial units (for the United States)
and metric units (for Canada, Mexico, etc.). If only one form of a measurement
is provided, assume Imperial units (generally inches) unless otherwise stated.

 Most Imperial measurements are rounded to the nearest tenth or hundredth of

an inch and most metric measurements are rounded to the nearest millimeter.

 The size of early escalators (Imperial/pre-Metric) is obtained by measuring

between the balustrade panels or the glass panels. On Otis units, the step
width is 8 inches narrower than the escalator width. For example:

• A 32 R is 32 inches between the balustrade panels and has 24-inch

wide steps.

• A 40 UB or 40 J escalator is 40 inches between the balustrade panels

and has 32-inch wide steps.

• A 48 R escalator measures 48 inches between the balustrade panels

and has 40-inch wide steps.

 Escalators and Trav-O-Lators® designated 1000 mm, 900 mm, 800 mm, and
600 mm have steps or pallets that are exactly that width (there is no need to
add 8 inches on these units).

40-in. wide step?
Escalator Parts

Escalators are designated by either a metric measurement, an imperial measurement, or

both. This picture shows how those measurements are determined. Note that the imperial
measurement (shown top) is from the left balustrade panel to the right balustrade panel.
The metric measurement, however, indicates the nominal step width. This explains why
the two measurements do not convert properly between systems (why a 48-inch escalator
is also called a 1000 mm escalator). To avoid errors, measure the step or pallet width and
provide that measurement to UNITEC.
