The Crucible

Review Sheet

Characters to Know:
Be sure to understand both the personalities and the background information about the following
characters. Know what they did in the play and the role that each had in the witch trials. It would also be
helpful to know how each of them change, if they change, from the first act to the last. Be sure to know their
motivations behind their actions as well as their disposition.

Thomas Putnam Rev. Parris Judge Danforth

John Proctor Goody Putnam Rebecca Nurse
Mary Warren Giles Corey Rev. Hale
Elizabeth Proctor Abigail Williams Tituba
Sarah Good Mercy Lewis Betty Parris

By understanding the characters well you should then be able to link them to the quotes that they said as
well. Think about quotes we discussed in class, quotes that students cited, or other quotes that explain the
character’s beliefs.

History:
Be sure you review the notes from the Salem Witch Trials video we watched before this unit. Reread
your notes because anything that we covered in class from the video is fair game and I will be looking for
specific things we discusses--"faking” your way through it won’t work! If you have no notes and would like me
to have a showing of the video, I can schedule that during the Advisory Exam Period. Let me know if anyone is
interested in this.

Themes:
Be sure to understand the role each of these themes has in the play. Which characters are involved with
each theme? How does that character shape the theme? What does Miller try to tell the audience about the
theme?

Hysteria
Jealousy
Honesty
Honor
Guilt
Good vs. Evil
Love

General Ideas:
Beyond themes you also need to think about some general ideas that are presented in the play. Some we
have discussed, others we have not, but you should be able to draw conclusions on your own about the
following ideas.

Who is to blame and why?

Who are victims and why?
Comparisons between characters
Conflicts between characters
