MEDIA & INFORMATION

LITERACY
1st Semester – Module 3

SDO Taguig City and Pateros

Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the

Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be
enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let’s Try before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
Let’s Learn

Week
The Evolution of Traditional
3 to New Media

When Gutenberg disrupted the scribing industry in 1440, he created the

means for mass communication and paved the way for the Age of Enlightenment,
the Renaissance and the scientific revolution. However, he could never have
imagined the modern media landscape that we now inhabit.
While the printing press has benefited from improvements and technological
advances over the years, from mechanization to digital presses, the most drastic
innovation in publishing came with the advent of the World Wide Web. Where
Gutenberg had made the replication of content possible, the Web democratized the
distribution, lowering the barrier to the access of information further than ever
before. – Joshua Leigh
In its infancy the breadth of content and the distribution channels were
limited (remember the agonizing sluggishness of dial-up and the limited Geocities
content?). However, we are now at a point where the Web is instant, pervasive and
has more content than anyone could ever consume in a number of lifetimes. Yet
the publishing industry is still wrestling with some fundamental questions: How do
we profit from published content? How do we uphold quality and integrity amid a
tidal wave of user (and bot) generated content? How do we ensure that readers can
still have shared experiences rather than retreat into tailored, targeted,
personalized bubbles?

Let’s Elaborate
Evolution of Media
Engage the learners in a discussion on how media and information has evolved throughout
history.

FOUR AGES TO THE CLASS

Pre-Industrial Age (Before 1700s) - People discovered fire, developed paper from plants, and
forged weapons and tools with stone, bronze, copper and iron. Examples:
• Cave paintings (35,000 BC)
• Clay tablets in Mesopotamia (2400 BC)
• Papyrus in Egypt (2500 BC)
• Acta Diurna in Rome (130 BC)

Industrial Age (1700s-1930s) - People used the power of steam, developed machine tools,
established iron production, and the manufacturing of various products (including books through
the printing press).

Examples:

• Printing press for mass production (19th century)

• Newspaper- The London Gazette (1640)
• Typewriter (1800)Telephone (1876)
• Motion picture photography/projection (1890)
• Commercial motion pictures (1913)
• Motion picture with sound (1926)
• Telegraph
• Punch cards

Electronic Age (1930s-1980s) - The invention of the transistor ushered in the electronic age.
People harnessed the power of transistors that led to the transistor radio, electronic circuits, and
the early computers. In this age, long distance communication became more efficient.

Examples:

• Transistor Radio
