Hydra-JetSM Perforating Process Service

The Hydra-Jet perforating process uses abrasive fluid pumped through high pressure jets to perforate casing and formation where shaped charges cannot be used effectively. It provides benefits like perforating in problematic wells with no depth or temperature limits and enables fracturing multiple payzones in one trip with less damage than explosives.

Hydra-Jet SM
Perforating Process Service
A fast, effective alternate perforating method to access payzones that are
beyond the reach of conventional perforating techniques.

The Grand Canyon is a great example of the tremendous

force and cutting action of moving fluid. The Hydra-Jet SM
perforating process service captures this force and provides
an excellent alternative to explosive perforating in “troubled”
wells. The Hydra-Jet perforating process can be combined
with fracturing to stage fracture multiple intervals in a
single trip.
Halliburton has successfully applied the Hydra-Jet perforating
process to over 3,000 zones in the last three years.
In the Hydra-Jet perforating process, abrasive fluid is
pumped through high pressure jets at casing strings, cement
and formation. When well conditions prohibit the use of
traditional perforating guns-a highly deviated or horizontal
wellbore, damaged casing or tubing, or tight restrictions
where shaped charges will not work effectively-the
payzones can often be accessed using the versatility of
coiled tubing (CT).
The Hydra-Jet tool is conveyed with coiled tubing to the
desired depth and sand-laden fluid is pumped at a pre-
determined rate for a specific time. The time required to
perforate varies depending on the sand concentration, fluid
pump rate and the number of strings of tubing or casing
that must be perforated. Once communication is observed
with the reservoir, the tool can be moved to a different
depth so that the entire payzone can be perforated.
Penetration depths of 10-12 inches can be achieved with this

The expected perforation size through the casing depends

on several parameters but typically is at least three times the
nozzle diameter - in most cases 9/16” to 3/4” hole sizes.

being located adjacent to the desired interval to be perforated. Section
Several methods of depth correlation are available:
1. Halliburton's DepthPro® wireless coiled tubing collar
locator service can be run in with the Hydra-Jet assembly
to sense the collars. The DepthPro™ CCL is available in
two sizes at this time: 2.25” OD and 3.25” OD.
2. A tubing end locator can be run in well that has a tubing
string.
3. A bridge plug can be set with a wireline below the zones
of interest. The coiled tubing can then be run in hole to
tag the bridge plug and correlate depth counters.

HSE and Quality Focus
• Requires smaller operating footprint for improved
environmental performance.
• Service is performed in a pressure-controlled environment.
The Hydra-Jet process is continually monitored and
improved under Halliburton's Correction, Prevention and
Improvement (CPI) process to achieve a high level of health,
safety, and environmental performance. CPI is used as the
main tool for communication of improvement ideas, lessons
learned, and process audit issues. Halliburton's Management
System process helps achieve global transfer of best practices
and consistently high service quality

Case Histories
South Texas. As a result of casing damage, a well could not
be perforated using shaped charges as the guns could not
pass through. Depth correlation was obtained by performing
a pre-run with a memory logging tool and marking the pipe.
A 60K coiled tubing unit with 1.5-in. coiled tubing was
used. Halliburton ran a 1.8-in. OD Hydra-Jet tool with three

jets at 120 degrees phasing. The nozzle ID was 1/8-in. diam-
eter. The desired depth of perforation was 14,213 ft. Fluid Michigan. A horizontal well with eight intervals was

to cut through the three tubing/ casing strings: 2-7/8” 7.9#, three 3/16-in. nozzles.
5” 23.2#, and 7-5/8” 29.7#, all cemented. The annulus
pressure on the well rose quickly when communication with
the reservoir was achieved. Similar Hydra-Jet perforation
jobs have been performed successfully on eight zones with
the deepest interval cut at 16,585 ft.
Piceance Basin. Eleven intervals were done using the
Hydra-Jet perforating process in a well with 4.5-in. casing.

California. The Hydra-Jet process was used to perforate 19
intervals in a well with 9.625-in. casing. Each interval was
perforated by pumping an 8-10 minute stage 1.0 ppg 10/40
sand through three 1/4-in. nozzles.
