What I Need to Know

The Most Essential Learning Competency you are about to learn from this
module is to plan and prepare for configuration. In this module, you will have a
boundless deal of understanding of planning and preparing computer system and
networking configuration by following Occupational Health and Safety Procedures.

Generally, in this module you are expected to be able to:

1. Plan and prepare computer system and networking configuration by following

Occupational Health and Safety Procedures.

vi
What I Know
Pre- Assessment:
Directions: True or False. Write True if the statement is correct and False if it is not
write your answer in your TLE-CSS Activity notebook.
1. Switch your computer on and off correctly. Insert and remove computer
equipment using the correct procedures.
2. You can drink in the computer laboratory.
3. Check the printer manual for the location of high-voltage components.
4. Cover sharp edges inside the computer case with tape.
5. Keep food and drinks out of your workspace.
6. Make sure that a fire extinguisher and first-aid kit are available in case of fire or
injury.
7. Cables should be installed in any location.
8. Failure to follow the prescribed safety procedures could result in fines.
9. Always, always, always remember to turn the power on before servicing
anything. This should always be your first step.
10. Everyone is responsible to adhere to all safety procedures when working in the
computer lab.
11. If you must leave your computer on and unattended for whatever
reason, turn off the monitor during your absence.
12. Even when unplugged power supplies can retain dangerous voltage.
13. Monitors generate high voltage internally which is potential to start an electrical
fire.
14. It is vital to stay safe in every working conditions.
15. Health and safety are of the outmost importance.

What’s in

In the previous lessons in your exploratory course, you have learned the
computer components and its system operations. You have also learned different
topics such as how to operate computer systems and networks. Do you think learning
about them is helpful?

1
PLAN AND PREPARE FOR
LESSON CONFIGURATION OF
1 COMPUTER SYSTEMS AND
NETWORK
What are the ways to operate computer?

How do you get the most out of your computer?

What if you operate a computer without following safety procedures, what will
happen?

What’s New

Activity 1. Try to reflect on this one:

JD is a computer technician. He works as a contractual employee in a company.

Coincidentally, the company he works for has a vacant regular position and he is the
one his boss likes because for every task his boss asks him to do, he plans to finish
his job quickly and smoothly. But his boss did not even see him following safety
procedures in his workplace. So, his boss wonders if it is right to hire JD or not.

If you are JD’s boss, will you hire him? Why?

Remember: Planning for all tasks is very necessary. The outcomes of the tasks
become smooth, durable and with quality. Along with planning is following proper

2
safety procedures to ensure security in our workplace at the same time to prevent
something from destroying what we do.

What is It

WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (OHS)?

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) – is a discipline concerned with preserving and
protecting human resources in the workplace.
WHY IS OHS IMPORTANT IN COMPUTER SYSTEM AND NETWORK
CONFIGURATION PLANNING AND PREPARATION?
Health and safety are of the outmost importance. People do not just realize just how
dangerous it can be, usually they often ignore the risk involved in opening and
operating a computer. It is vital to stay safe in every working conditions. Whether you
are a professional or a beginner staying safe must be put into priority to prevent
troubles and damage to any person or to any object in a work area.

Safe working conditions help prevent injury to people and damage to computer
equipment. A safe workspace is clean, organized, and properly lighted. A hazardous
computer component must dispose or recycled properly. Make it a habit to follow
guidelines that direct how to dispose specific items. When an individual violates these
rules, there can be legal penalties. To keep you safe, this module delivers the general
and fire safety strategies that protects the technician and the equipment.

Follow the basic safety guidelines to prevent cuts, burns, electrical shock, and damage
to eyesight. As a best practice, make sure that a fire extinguisher and first-aid kit are
available in case of fire or injury. Poorly placed or unsecured cables can cause tripping
hazards in a network installation. Cables should be installed in conduit or cable trays
to prevent hazards.

GENERAL SAFETY

3
Here are some general safety guidelines:

1. Jewelry and Clothing

Remove your watch and jewelry and secure loose clothing. Items like this could get
caught in machinery or make contact with an electrical hazard causing death or loss
of limb.

www.google.com

2. Power
Turn off the power and unplug equipment before performing service. Failing to do so
could be an electrical hazard or cause destruction of equipment.

www.google.com

3. Sharp Edges
Cover sharp edges inside the computer case with tape. NO BLEEDING ON THE
PROJECT!! the metal on a computer case can be very sharp and cause cuts. These
cuts can cause serious infection.

4
www.google.com

4. Power Supply and CRT

Never open a power supply or a CRT monitor. Doing so without the proper training
could be a shock hazard leading to death.

www.google.com

5. Laser Printers
Do not touch areas in printers that are hot or that use high voltage. Laser printers use
high voltage to heat up the fusing unit in order to fuse the toner to the paper. Areas
around the fusing unit contact excessive heat and electrical power which could cause
burns or deadly electrical shock.

5
www.google.com

6. Fire Extinguisher
Know where the fire extinguisher is located and how to use it. Use the P.A.S.S.
mnemonic to use it properly. Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the
handle, Sweep from side to side.

www.google.com

7. Food and Drink

Keep food and drinks out of your workspace. Having food and drinks in your work area
can cause spills and debris that create additional hazards for your self or the
equipment.

6
www.google.com

8. Clean and Clutter Free

Keep your workspace clean and free of clutter. Having a cluttered and/or dirty work
area can cause potential safety hazards for both you and equipment. It also feels better
to work in a clean environment.

9. Unsecured Cables
Poorly placed or unsecured cables can cause tripping hazards in a network
installation. Cables should be installed in conduit or cable trays to prevent hazards.

7
10. Safety Glasses
Safety glasses should wear when working on PC's, making cables, working in ceilings,
any time a potential eye hazard is present.

11. Warning of the Senses

Be sensitive about smell on something burning, see a component that is burnt or hear
something that does not sound not normal, immediately stop what you are doing and
make sure to check the abnormality, remove and replace as soon as possible.

FIRE SAFETY GUIDELINES

Make sure that a fire extinguisher is rated for class A, B, & C and it is within a
reasonable distance from your computer installation. If you leave your computer on
and unattended for whatever reason, turn off the monitor during your absence.
Monitors generate high voltage internally which is potential to start an electrical fire.
Note: The switch for the monitor is usually located at the bottom, side or rear of the
screen. Turning off the monitor leaves the computer On and will not disrupt the
computers operation or compromise data losses. When you return, simply turn the
monitors back on ant wait for few seconds to warm up. Ensure that your facilities meet
local fire safety codes. When working with computer components, always consider the
possibility of an accidental fire and prepare how to react.
If there is a fire, you should follow these safety procedures
• Take a minute to think which way you would go to escape your place
• Never fight a fire that is out of control or not contained.

• Make sure to know all the locations of all exits for a fire escape route before
beginning any work.

9
• Get out of the building quickly in case of an out-of-control fire.

• Contact emergency services immediately for help.

Now that you are equipped with the knowledge on the OHSP used in configuration.
