4-Quantity Calculations

The document provides examples and explanations for calculating building quantities using different methods. It discusses the center line method, separate wall method, and crossing method. An example is given for calculating quantities of various items like excavation, concrete, and blocks for a building with a room plan provided. The quantities are tabulated and calculated using both the center line and separate wall methods.

BUILDING QUANTITY CALCULATIONS
Building Quantities Calculations

For calculating the building quantities , the

dimensions must be taken very correctly for all building
parts from plans , sections , elevations & more details .

methods of calculating the building items :

• Center line method .
• Separate or individual wall method ,(in to in and out to
out method.
• Crossing method .
Center line method

Calculate the length of the walls through their center

lines for all walls , footings ,…etc.
This method is used usually for a simple geometric shape
buildings like ( straight wall , square , rectangular , circular,
triangle , trapezoidal and polygon area).
For calculating the quantities of the items multiply the
length into the width & height or thickness ….etc.
Example - 1 :
Determine the volume of the excavation for the wall shown in
figure .

Solution
Example 2 :
Calculate the quantity of the excavation for the wall shown
in figure .

Solution :
Example 3 :
For the room shown in the following plan Calculate
the quantities of the following items:
1- Excavation of the foundations
2- Broken stone under footings
3- Reinforced concrete 1:2:4 for the footings
4- Building walls using solid concrete blocks 15x20x40 cm
under D.P.C,
5- Building walls using cavity concrete blocks 20x20x40 cm
above D.P.C.
6- plain concrete 1:2:4 for D.P.C.
0.80
Solution :
1. Excavation

2. Broken stone
3. Reinforced concrete ( footing )
L = 18.8𝑚
𝐵 = 0.6𝑚
𝐻 = 0.4𝑚
𝑉 = 𝐿 × 𝐵 × 𝐻 → 𝑉 = 18.8 × 0.6 × 0.4 = 4.512𝑚3

4. Building wall under D.P.C. ( using solid block

(40*20*15)cm )
𝐿 = 18.8𝑚
𝐵 = 0.4𝑚
𝐻 = 1.0𝑚
𝑉 = 18.8 × 0.4 × 1.0 = 7.52𝑚3
5. D.P.C. ( plain concrete )
𝐿 = 18.8 − 1.0 = 17.8𝑚
𝐵 = 0.2𝑚
𝐻 = 0.1𝑚 𝑛𝑒𝑔𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡
𝐴 = 17.8 × 0.2 = 3.56𝑚2
𝑜𝑟 𝑉 = 17.8 × 0.2 × 0.1 = 0.356𝑚3

6. Building wall over D.P.C.by cavity block with 20cm

thick
𝐿 = 18.8𝑚
𝐵 = 0.2𝑚
𝐻 = 3.0𝑚
𝐴 = 18.8 × 3.0 = 56.4𝑚2
Openings& lintels ( reduction )
𝑊1 → 𝐴 = 2.0 × 2.0 = 4.0𝑚2
𝐷1 → 𝐴 = 1.0 × 2.20 = 2.20𝑚2
𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙 → 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑊1 → 𝐴 = 2 + 0.4 × 0.3 = 0.72𝑚2
𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙 → 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐷1 → 𝐴 = 1 + 0.4 × 0.3 = 0.42𝑚2
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 2 × 0.72 + 0.42 = 1.86𝑚2
∴ 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑤𝑠 + 𝑑𝑜𝑜𝑟 + 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑠
= 2 × 4 + 2.20 + 1.86 = 12.06𝑚2
∴ 𝑛𝑒𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑏𝑦 𝑐𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑏𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑘
= 56.4 − 12.06 = 44.34𝑚2
7. Reinforced concrete beam
𝐿 = 18.8𝑚
𝐵 = 0.2𝑚
𝐻 = 0.3𝑚
𝑉 = 18.8 × 0.2 × 0.3 = 1.128𝑚3

8. Reinforced concrete slab

𝐿 = 5 + 2 × 0.8 = 6.6𝑚
𝐵 = 4 + 2 × 0.8 = 5.6𝑚
𝐻 = 0.15𝑚
𝑉 = 6.6 × 5.6 × 0.15 = 5.544𝑚3
