Essential Question:
What are the lasting effects of the Hammurabi Code in our world today?
The lasting effects are none. They are none you can die for except murdering someone.
Questions to Discuss:
1. What about Hammurabi’s Code surprised you the most?
The thing that surprised us the most is that the punishment where very violent. To us
it’s surprising that the Code is violent because back then if you broke one of the laws
you would be killed. Now laws are different and the consequences are less harsh.

2. Are laws necessary in society? What makes a law good and just?
Laws are necessary because they help us stay organized so things don’t get out of
control. A good law keeps people in check and makes sure that people are
responsible for their actions.

3. How is this Code similar or different to other sets of rules, such as the 10
Commandments and the Bill of Rights?
The code is similar because they are rules like the 10 Commandments. The Bill of
Rights allows us to have rights, and before Hammurabi’s Code, people would just get
in trouble for whatever. After Hammurabi’s Code, people had more rights than before.

4. How would you change Hammurabi’s Code if we were to use it in our country today?
We would change Hammurabi’s Code by making it less bloody, violent, and brutal.
