Specific 9. Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction of numbers with answers to
Learning 1000 (limited to 1-, 2- and 3-digit numerals), concretely, pictorially and symbolically,
Outcomes:
by: • using personal strategies for adding and subtracting with and without the support of
manipulatives • creating and solving problems in context that involve addition and
subtraction of numbers.
10. Apply mental mathematics strategies and number properties in order to understand
and recall basic addition facts and related subtraction facts to 18.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Identify key points of word problems
2. Solve math equations they make from word problems
ASSESSMENTS
Observations:  Are students identifying what are key words and ideas?
 Can they analyze the question and calculate the answer and check it?
Key Questions:  How can we solve problems in our head?
 How can we break down word problems?
 How can word we solve word problems?
Products/Performances  Students identify important words and sections in a problem
:  Students calculate the answer using mental math strategies or manipulatives

Make sure videos, internet, and LCD work prior to lesson
Introduction Time
Attention Grabber Video/cartoon about math word problems in real world
Talk about how most math problems are every day problems we solve 10 min
(recipe doubling, counting time)
Assessment of Prior Review mental math problem solving (doubles )

Body Time
Learning Activity #1 Work through a few word problems together
10 min
Use strategies such as math sentence, blocks, CUBES
Teacher Notes: Assessments/ Girls may need help reading through speech to text or buddy reading,
Differentiation offer differentiated questions for IPP that are simple equations
Learning Activity #2 Work in groups and answer on mini white boards 15 min
Teacher Notes: Assessments/ Have girls in groups so they have others who can help with reading
Differentiation Have students return whiteboards (highest number returns)
Learning Activity #3 Have additional problems for students to work through 15 min
Teacher Notes: Assessments/ Not all students will work through every point, Push those learners who
Differentiation are ready for more and have students demonstrate independent
comprehension
Closure Time
Consolidation of Have students reiterate Cubes definition
2 min
Learning: Reference the strategies covered for math problems

Students:
Feedback To Students 1 min
Transition To Next
-STOP or doorbell 1 min
Lesson

- Good review of mental math strategies

- Don’t assume students remember strategies form previous years (ask if they
remember!)
- Don’t ask students this young to copy out anything! Make small notes that can
be printed and glued into their books (Also add pictorial indicators!)
- Main focus on classroom management!
Reflections from the
- Be strichter and ease off later if necessary
lesson
- Good switching between students for answers and names!! (thanks Shannon!)
- Focus more on students with differentiation during work time. Have other
students support each other (3b4me)
- Do a mini lesson (1-2 min)on things covered in a video that may not apply to
the immediate activity (To prevent them from being confused and getting ready
for later learning)
