SDO – Surigao City
Introduction

These Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) were designed and written with you in mind to
help you learn the essentials science concepts on the Effect of the Environment on
the Cycle of Organisms. The scope of this learning material focuses on the many
different learning situations. Moreover, the language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of learners. The lessons are also arranged following the standard
sequence of the course. Hence, the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The LAS contain:

Competency: Describe the effect of the environment on the life cycle of
organisms.
S4LT-IIg-h-14

It is divided into four sub lessons, namely:

Lesson 1. Life Cycle of Selected Animals with Complete and Incomplete
Metamorphosis
Lesson 2. Life Cycle of Animals: Egg Laying Animals
Lesson 3. Life Cycle of Humans

After going through this LAS, you are expected to:

1. Identify some animals that undergo complete/incomplete metamorphosis in
their life cycle
2. Recognize the different stages of the life cycle of animals undergoing
complete/incomplete metamorphosis
3. Determine the stages of development of an egg to becoming a chick
4. Identify life cycles of some selected egg laying animals
5. Distinguish the stages of Human Life Cycle
6. Categorize the stages of growth and development that humans go through

Lesson 1
Life Cycle of Selected Animals

 Metamorphosis is a biological process by which an animal physically

develops after birth or hatching. It is part of the life cycle of the most insects. A
term metamorphosis refers to the way insects develop, grow, and change
form, usually (but not always) accompanied by change of habitat or behavior.

There are two types of metamorphosis: complete or gradual.

 Complete metamorphosis
Most insects go through the four stages of complete metamorphosis,
including the lady bug, housefly, mosquito and butterfly.
1. Egg -A female insects lay eggs.
2. Larvae- hatch from egg but grow quickly enough to have molt or
shed their exoskeleton do not look adult insects. For instance, the
larvae of butterflies are caterpillars. Larvae grow quickly enough to
have to molt or shed their exoskeletons a few times before they
pupate. Sometimes, these stages of growth in larvae are called
“instars
3. Pupa- Larvae make coon around like it was, and existing
themselves, and become busy changing into their adult forms. They
do not eat during this time. This can take few days, or in some
cases months.
4. Adult- After a period of time, larvae is nothing like it was, and exists
the coon or larval body as an adult. This life cycle starts over again.

Fly Life Cycle

 Gradual metamorphosis
About 12% of insects go through the three stages of gradual metamorphosis,
including the mayfly, cicada, grasshopper, aphid, louse and cockroach.

1. Egg – A female insect lay eggs. Sometimes the eggs are in group and
protected by a covering or case,
2. Nymph- The eggs hatch into nymphs. Nymph look like small adults, but
usually don’t have wings. They eat, grow and change. Nymph molts their
exoskeletons as they grow. As this occurs, they gradually begin to look
more and more like adult.
3. Adult- Once the nymph has grown to an adult size, they stop molting.
Generally, adults are the only stage in an insect’s life when it has wings.
Adult’s primary interest is malting.

Lesson 2: Life Cycle of Animals: Egg Laying Animals

Activity 1: “What’s inside a Chicken Egg?
These animals lay eggs.
Animals hatch from eggs.

The Chicken Egg

The egg yolk is kept in place by the egg white that is thick and sticky. The
egg yolk’s white spot is the developing chick. The egg white protects the
developing chick from any danger, while the eggshell protects the egg yolk and
the egg white.

The development of the thick takes place in a period of 21 days.

LIFE CYCLE OF A FROG

A female frog lays egg among water plant that thrive in water. A male frog drops its
sperm on the eggs. The frog eggs are fertilized by the frog sperms in the water. The
fertilized eggs develop into young tadpoles. A tadpole develops gills through which it
breaths. It uses its tail for swimming. As the tadpole grows, its hind legs appear. The
tail becomes shorter. The gills disappear and lungs develop. The young frog can now
breath out of water. The young frog grows into an adult frog and life cycle is repeated.

Lesson 3: Life Cycle of Humans

Activity: “What Stage Am I?”
The Human Life Cycle Stages
Birth
The start of the human life cycle begins after the baby is delivered out by its
mother to the world.
Infancy
Is categorized as lasting from birth through the first year of life. The infant is
completely dependent upon its parents or caretakers for survival.

Childhood
Takes place between ages 1 to 10. The first 2 years, the child is called a
toddler. During this time, the child learns how to walk, talk and be more self-
sufficient. The child is susceptible during this time to learned habits and
behaviors.
Adolescence
Takes place between ages 12 and 18 and is a critical turning point because
it is when puberty takes place.
Boy’s voice changes and girls get their periods. As such, they begin to
separate more from the parents and become more independent.
Adulthood
Lasts from age 18 throughout old age.
Adulthood is when human being is fully grown and must provide entirely for
themselves. This is also a significant time that adults can give birth.

Remember these:
The Different Stage of Human Development
Children go through distinct periods od development as they move from infants to
young adults. During each of these stages’ multiple changes in the development of
the brain are taking place. What occurs and approximately when these
developments take place are genetically determined. However, environmental
circumstances and exchanges with key individuals within that environment have
significant influence on how each child benefits from each other developmental
event.

Learning Activities
General Directions: Do it on a separate sheet of paper.

Activity 1. “Is It Complete or Incomplete Metamorphosis?”

Guide Questions:
1. What is the first stage of life cycle of complete metamorphosis? Describe it.

3 saucers

What you do:

1. Get 1 raw chicken egg
2. Carefully break the shell and place its content in a saucer.
Observe its content.

4. Examine the egg yolk with the hand lens
5. Using the small stick, stir the egg white
6. Observe what happens.
7. Crack the hardboiled egg.
8. Peel it off then cut or divide the egg inti two halves.
9. Examine the content inside.
7
Guide Questions:
1. What features have you observed with the raw egg?
2. What happens when you stir the egg white? What do you see in the egg yolk?
3. What features have you observed with the hardboiled egg?
4. What features have you observed with the balut egg?
Activity 3. What Stage Am I?
Guide Questions:
1. A child cannot eat alone. He needs the help of his parents. What stage of
human development does he belong?
2. What skills can a child display between the ages 2-10?
3. What is the last stage of human development? What distinct characteristics
describe individuals under this stage?
4. 4.What stages of development is being described in this riddle- “In the
morning, he moves with four feet, at midday with two and in the afternoon,
with three. Who am I?
5. If a child learns to walk directly without passing through crawling in his
developmental
5. stage, did he skip one of the identified human development stages? Explain
your answers.

8
