Application of The Fuzzy C Means Technique To Modelling The Montserrat Geothermal System

The objective of this study was to improve the structural and physical interpretation of the Montserrat Geothermal System (MGS) using a three dimensional joint interpretation technique called Fuzzy c-means clustering. Density data from a gravity survey, velocity data from a seismic tomography survey, and resistivity data from a magnetotellurics survey were interpolated onto a common grid and analyzed using the Fuzzy c-means clustering technique in Python. The optimum number of clusters was determined to be four, each indicating main structural features of the MGS assigned different physical property values. The properties of each cluster will be used in another study to help refine geothermal well placement and model reservoir performance.

Application of the Fuzzy c means technique to modelling the Montserrat Geothermal system.

Montserrat is of one of the many volcanic islands in the Caribbean that has the potential to utilize
geothermal energy for electricity production. Geothermal exploration on the island has resulted in two
successful geothermal wells drilled in 2013 and a third well currently being drilled. Well placement
has relied on modelling the physical properties of the Montserrat Geothermal system (MGS) with the
use of geophysical data. However, the non-uniqueness of the geophysical models and interpretations
can lead to uncertainties when utilising geophysical data. The aim of this study is to improve on the
structural and physical interpretation of the MGS with the use of a three dimensional joint
interpretation technique. To help reduce uncertainties, the Fuzzy c means clustering technique is
applied to three geophysical datasets: density obtained from a gravity survey that has not been used in
previous joint geophysical studies, velocity perturbation obtained from a high resolution seismic
tomography survey, and resistivity obtained from a magnetotellurics survey. The three datasets were
interpolated onto a common grid and the clustering technique was applied using the Python
programming language. The optimum number of clusters, four, was determined from the partioning
co-efficient and partioning entropy. Each of these clusters indicates the main structural features of the
MGS and are assigned various density, velocity and resistivity values. The physical properties of each
structure within the geothermal system will be utilized in another study to help refine the locations of
geothermal wells and model the geothermal reservoir performance.
