Ch. 2 Numbers up to 1000

Topic : Counting in Hundreds

Activity : 1

A. Take any book / last year’s term book which

has price written on it. It should have 3-digit
numbers. Ask the child to read the price / cost
of the book. Write that number (For Rs. 250.00, write only 250 ) on a paper and tell
the child that it is a three-digit number as it is shows 3-digits.

And, in the place value chart start writing from the right side in Ones ( O ) place.
Then, the left side, Tens ( T ) place and then in the Hundreds ( H ) place and inform
that it’s value is greatest than the numbers in the tens and ones place.

B. Any object with price tag (for ex.: a pencil box of 10 pencils. Cost is Rs.50). Ask
the child that if you bought 2 such boxes how much would you have to pay to the
shopkeeper ?

Let the child add and get the answer, 100.

And, in the place value chart start writing from the right side in Ones ( O ) place.
Then, the left side, Tens ( T ) place and then in the Hundreds ( H ) place and inform
that it’s value is greatest than the numbers in the tens and ones place.

Note: If the child asks why the numbers

are written on the left side, make them
H T O understand that carrying and borrowing we
have done from left side. Explain after 9
1 0 0
we get 2-digit number 10. (10 – 9 , 11 + 9).

Recall that we have done numbers from 1 to 100, the smallest 2 - digit number
is 10 and the largest 2 – digit number is 99, and now let us learn about the
next place value on the left side in the place value chart.

Remember : (Show the figure below and inform the child.)

In our number system :-

1. Every number is 1 greater than the number before it.

2. 99 (Ninety – nine) is the greatest 2 - digit number.

3. In a 2 – digit number, the number on the left tells the number of tens and the
number on the right tells the number of ones.

Therefore, 99 means 9 tens and 9 ones. 9 9

One more than 99 or 99 + 1 is 100.

( 1 one )

(10 such ones = 1 ten)

(1 Ten ) ( 1 Hundred)

Meaning : 10 ones = 1 ten
H T O
10 tens = 1 hundred
1 0 0

tens ? hundreds ? ( in digits )

i. 20 tens 2 blocks 2 hundreds 200

ii. 50 tens
5 hundreds 500

5 blocks

iii. 90 tens
9 hundreds 900

9 blocks

So, we can write : ( If and only if you have a rough notebook ).

How many How many = how many = hundred Number name
