Name: WEEK 16

Theme DAY 4
READ THE PASSAGE   Think about the lesson that the judge teaches Ned and Chef Mario.

Ned’s Nose Gets Sued

Ned sat near the window with his pot of boiled noodles. He deeply inhaled the smells
of tomato, onion, and garlic that were wafting up through the air from Pasta Perfecto, the
restaurant below his apartment. The smell of the sauces transformed his plain noodles
into the most delicious of dishes.
Just then, a fist pounded on Ned’s door. He opened it to see Chef Mario wagging his
finger. “You thief! I know what you’re doing! You’re enjoying the smell of my food and yet
you’re paying for nothing! I demand that you pay me for the smells you are stealing!” Ned
thought the request was silly. He refused to pay, and so Chef Mario took him to court.
The judge listened as the chef accused Ned’s nose of stealing. Ned explained that he
was a college student and could not afford to eat at Pasta Perfecto. Finally the judge held
up a metal cup and told Ned to put all of his money into it. Ned dropped in a few dollars
and a lot of change. The judge shook the cup and spoke. “I rule that the sound of Ned’s
money pays Chef Mario for the smell of his sauces.” Then the judge returned the money
to Ned.
Chef Mario stared at the floor. Suddenly he looked up and smiled. “From now on,” the
chef said, “Pasta Perfecto will give discounts to students!”
