Video Reflection-Educ 1301 - Mflores

Michael Flores observed a variety of classroom videos covering different grade levels and subjects. For early childhood, he watched a kindergarten video on literacy where the teacher incorporated word walls and author's chair. For elementary, he found a 4th grade math video breaking down multiplication in an engaging way using think-pair-share. For middle school, a video on transfers showed how teachers can make lessons meaningful by connecting content to real-world problems and allowing students to apply learning. The video observations provided examples of different teaching philosophies to inform Flores' future classroom.

Video Reflection

I used a variety of videos for observation this semester. I used videos covering a wide

variety of grades and subjects. I was able to view real classrooms and see how teachers

effectively teach a variety of students. I was able to see all types of learning styles and the

educational philosophies used throughout the classrooms and videos.

For the hours of observation pertaining to early childhood, I watched about becoming

readers and writers. This video was about a kindergarten class that the teacher allowed the

students access to opportunities for literacy using centers. The students were able to practice on

their own. I liked the way she incorporated the use of the word wall, letting students create

sentences with the words. I also liked the idea of having an author’s chair in the classroom. It is a

great way for students to learn to feel comfortable sharing their writing. In this video the teacher

discusses how she scaffolds the students reading. She begins with a read aloud, shared reading,

guided reading, and finally independent reading. Throughout this process the teacher's role

changes, allowing the students to become the teacher.

For the hours of observation pertaining to the elementary age group, I found the video

about fourth grade math to be the most interesting. This video explained and broke down

multiplication in a different way than I have ever seen. I liked the way the students were

engaged. I really liked the think, pair, and share activity. The image activity was a great way for

students to show their knowledge of multiplication facts. The students were able to identify

different math vocabulary words, like what an array is. In this video the teacher used background

knowledge and other information from previous lessons and integrated into the math lesson.

Finally, for middle school age hours of observation, I really found the video about

transfers to be the most interesting and beneficial. This allows teachers to make sure what they

are teaching has meaning and purpose. The idea of transfer allows students to make connections

with material learned in the classroom and real word problems. Allowing students to work

together to solve problems, allows them to realize how the information being learned is useful.

There are multiple ways to apply the learning to real life applications. By teaching students

content, they will need later on in life, it makes learning purposeful.

Over five hours of observation was just a small snapshot of a couple of different

classrooms and teacher examples. I was able to observe and analyze different teaching and

learning approaches that I hope to take in my future classroom.
