It was taken from the Italian word ballare, meaning “to dance” and
ballo ,referring to dances performed in a ballroom .There are several
definitions of ballet from different authors .The following show the
definitions of ballet from several authors:
Haskel 1965-“Ballet is a combination of the arts of dancing, poetry music, and painting. The essential
quality of the ballet dancer is grace, that is, phrasing, fluidity, harmony, the making of words into a
poetic whole; bound up with the reaction to music that goes far deeper than a purely rhythmic
reaction.”
Burian 1963-“Ballet is an artistic, programmatic, scenic dance accompanied by music. It is basically a
special and generically unique form which resulted from the synthesis, collaboration, and equilibrium
of several different types of art.”
Burian 1963
“The art of gesture and mime interprets, by specific means of expression, the thematic and emotional
content of the scenario on which it is based, bringing the poet’s ideas to life, presenting the story with
all its conflicts, plots and solutions.”
● The art of Ballet can trace its origins to the early seventeenth
century, when dancers performed to entertain audiences between
scenes of an opera.
● These short dances grew in popularity and importance until they became a form of theater in
their own right, accompanied by a standardization of movements and defining of other stylistic
conventions.
● Many of the ballets presented at his court were created by the Italian-French composer Jean
Baptiste Lully and the French choreographer Pierre Beauchamp, who is said to have defined
the five positions of the feet.
Compositions of a Ballet Class
Dancing imposes great physical demands of the body. Therefore, a ballet class is designed carefully
to prepare the body fit. Each ballet class should consist of the following segments:
● Warm-up – limbering and stretching exercises that warm and gently stretch the muscles
before trying the difficult moves. A good warm-up is the best start to a ballet class as ballet
puts your body in positions that are not used to executing.
● Barre exercises - Every ballet class begins at the barre. Dancers use the support of the barre
to work through exercises one side of their body at a time. Dancers first hold on with one hand
and work the opposite leg, then turn around and hold on with the other hand and work the
opposite leg.
● Center work exercises- After warming up at the barre, dancers move to the center of the
room for center work. Center exercises are similar to barre work except dancers do not have
the support of the barre.
● Adagio - Adagio consists of slow, graceful steps that help develop balance, extension, and
control. Adagio helps a dancer concentrate on the lines being formed by their body.

● Reverence - Every ballet class concludes with reverence, a series of bows and curtsies
performed to slow music. Reverence gives the ballet dancers a chance to pay respect to and
acknowledge the teacher and pianist. Reverence is a way of celebrating ballet's traditions of
elegance and respect. Also, the ballet class may end with students applauding the teacher and
musician for dance.
