Comprehension Questions About the Structure 1. What is the essay about? What is its thesis? The essay is about the stereotyped idea of manliness. Its thesis was being a man sucks because of the idea of manliness was set on standard that every man 2. How did Paul Theroux develop the essay’s thesis? Paul Theroux developed the essay’s thesis using his own experience and his thoughts about the definition of manhood. 3. What do you think is the purpose of the writer? For me, I think the purpose of the writer is to break the stereotyped idea of manliness. The writer wants to tell the readers that there should not be a standard for a man to prove that he is a man. 4. Go back to your annotation. What are the words that you found difficult to understand? The words I found difficult to understand were connives, subverted, coquettishness, grotesque, treacherous, pugnacity, roistered. 5. Are there concepts and/or references mentioned in the text that you are not familiar with? What are those? There are references mentioned in the text that I am not familiar with. The Personality Development and Psychopathology by Dr. Norman Cameron and Lives in New York with her three children were the references I am not familiar with. 6. Based on the language and style of the writer, who do you think is the target audience of this essay? Based on the language and style of the writer, I think is the target audience of this essay was everyone. The writer talks about how the society has a stereotyped idea of manliness. The society or the people around set a standard for a man to be called a man which is biased. About the Context 7. Why does Theroux dislike being a man? Theroux dislike being a man because of the idea of manliness in America is biased. It does not fit the way of him living as a man because of the stereotyped idea of manliness. 8. Based on his different definitions, what is his concept of being a man? Based on his different definitions, Theroux’s concept of being a man was biased. It is very upsetting that to prove that you’re a man is by doing sports. Being a writer does not make someone less than anyone. We should be fair and equal and not use sexism to be superior to anyone. 9. Does your concept of manhood/manliness discussed in the warm-up activity match to Theroux’s concept of manhood? What accounts for the similarities or differences? What/who has influenced your definition of the concept? I do agree with the author about his thoughts. I think every man and woman should live without these standards or limit to be called as a man or a woman. No matter what is the gender everyone is equal; no superiority. 10.What do you think are the issues in Theroux’s definition of manhood? I think the issues in Theroux’s definition of manhood were how the society creates the standards that were not fit for everyone creating a manly or feminine standard to the people. Because of this, many people cannot freely do what they want to do like how they express themselves through the way they dressed.
