Candidates must only imagine a situstion and give their own opinions on how the situation cen be resolved. ~ A sheet of visual prompts is given to the candidates to help them to generate ideas. However, the candidates may use their ‘own ideas if they want to; they are not cesircted to discussing the visual prompts. = Candidates are not assessed on their ideas; only thei use of appropriate language and interactive strategies. + Candidates should be encouraged to make a positive contribution (move the discussion forward, but should also be aware that they should not be tempted to reach a conclusion too quickly - the discussion is an opportunity to show off thei language shils {the outcome of the discussion is not assessed, only the language shils used to reach the outcome). HOW TO PRACTISE: Pair and group discussions in class will help the students leara the skils they require to succeed in this task. Candidates should practise exem-type questions and learn to discuss the situation and alternatives fully (making use of the range of Visual prompts provided) before drawing their conclusions. ~ PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS: Candidates can also be encouraged to develop the required language skills by problem solving in pairs oF groups. Teachers can use reallife/imaginary scenarios and pravide visual prompts, a set number of options ‘or draw sketches on the board wich the students can use for ideas. For example: Your house is on fre and you have 20 seconds fo get aut before itis too Jate. You can only carry one item out of the house with you What do you take? a} laptop computer b) mobile phone ¢) photo album a) wallet e) IMP3 player. Another example: You find a genie in a bottle and he ‘rants you one wish. What do you wish for? a) world peace b} to be rich c) to be famous a) a long We a) happiness. ~ INTERVIEWS: keally, moving towards exam time, students should be given the opportunity to take part in practice interviews which sinuiate exam conditions, WHAT TO PRACTISE: Here is an example (based on Test 1 in this book) of how the speaking exam, Part 2, is conducted, The 10 Speaking Test - Part 25 provided in this book are aa excellent cescurce for practising this section of the exam, INTERLOCUTOR Im going to describe a situation to you. ‘Say to both candidates Your friend John needs your help because he can't decide which school hobby club to join John is very Strong and fit and loves the outdoors. Takk together about the different hobby clubs he cout join and say which one would be best. Here is a picture with some ideas to help you. Pause PM say that again, ‘Your friend John needs your help because he car't decide which school hobby club to join. John is very strong and fit and loves the outdoors. What about salting? 1B: I think sailing is too difficult - you need a lot of practice to get good at i A: Okay, but don't forget it's a very uncommon hobby and it right be interesting B: I see what you mean, and John is strong and fit so he should be able to do it. Maybe he'd like sailing afterall ‘A: Well let's thnk abut that one, too. Now, what about horse riding and tennis? Doesn't Jotn already play tennis? A: Defiritely, So i's either horse riding or hiking, which one should we choose? B: That's a hard decision, | think hiking because John is so fit and strong he would probably be really good at it 1A: And maybe horse riding would be very expensive, too, so perhaps hiking is the best option. B: Then we're agreed, A: Agreed, We've decided to choose the hiking club for John. Looking at the sample dialogue, you might notice that there is a pattern here: generally, a student chooses one picture to talk about, makes one or two comments end then asks the other student for bis opinion tis important for students to have a system that they are comfortable with to use in a discussion like this, Pethaps the simplest and easiest to fotow approach is ‘student A: Comments on first picture and asks Student 6's opinion. Student B; Comments on first picture, then moves on to second picture, comments on it and asks Student A what he thinks. Student A: Comments on second picture, then moves on to third picture, comments on it and asks Student & what he thinks. ‘And 0 On. ‘This process is then epeated until all the pictures have been discussed, Itis known as the pass the baif method. The students pass the imaginary bel back and forth. Once the ball is in your court, you have to comment on what was last sold, say something new and ‘ask for the other student's opinion. In fact, Pass the Ball can be 2 reat game for practising tis task in pairs or in groups. The rules are very easy to remember and once everyone knows what to do once the bal isin their court, the gaime flows well. Using a real ball, this game can be 2 lot of fun for young leaner, wile at the same time they are practising the key skills they need to succeed in Part 2 of the exam. ‘Students need to be taught simple phrases to perform the linguistic functions required in Part 2. For example: Giving an opi F tht Hf you ask me. in my opinion... ITY VIEW Inviting an opinion; What do you think? Wouldnt you agree? What about..? What's your take? ‘Agreeing: Definitely Youre absolutely right. ‘coulit agree more. For sure, Disagreeing (politelyy: Okay, but | thnk.
