In Eurasia, before 1450 c. Islam spread greatly and Silk Road and Indian Ocean trade
expanded greatly. The expansion of these trade routes and development of economic
innovations such as banking houses and flying cash led to significant increase in the
activity of merchants. Islam was also spread greatly at the time due to interaction
between various cultures through diasporic communities and the active role that Sufis
played in spreading the religion while adapting to various local cultures. Both the spread
of Islam and the expansion of Silk Road and Indian Ocean trade led to wealth
accumulation. (Thesis 1) Although responses to wealth accumulation in Eurasia in the
period prior to c.1450 were similar in that both religions and states generally
encouraged it, they differed significantly in their rationale because religions believed
wealth should be utilized for the greater good while states believed wealth accumulation
was a right as long as businesses did not mistreat consumers.
