After the all the topics that we’ve tackled in NSTP or National Training Service
Program which includes Community Engagement, Covid-19 Awareness, Citizenship,
Disaster and Risk Reduction Management, Volunteerism and what is NSTP really all
about, it teaches us to be a better person and develops keen awareness of what is
really going around us. Like the current issues that is tackled every time in the news.
For example, there are a lot of problems that we encounter every day. It could be
within our home, community or a much bigger scale like environment that affects
everything that is involved with it. Recently, some parts in the Philippines
experienced a very strong typhoon locally known as Typhoon Ulysses and currently
there is still an ongoing worldwide pandemic which is the COVID-19. Things that are
happening now tested the resiliency of Filipinos and the efficiency of the government
in handling such situations. Preserving the lives of many people is truly a challenge
given the fact that the Philippines’ health care system is not that developed wherein
we have limited health facilities to respond to a huge segment of our population
getting infected with the disease and to cater to people who are affected by the past
typhoons. This a constant reminder of the importance of preparedness and critical
urgency among the government agencies, compliance and order in people, and for
us future health care providers, I am reminded of the significance and essentiality of
the call to our duty with compassion and professionalism.
Typically, community engagement is incorporated into a course or series of
courses by way of a project that has both learning and community action goals.
Sadly, we weren’t able to really have a hands-on activity since we are currently on
virtual classes. However, it doesn’t mean that the things mentioned in the topics
were totally unrelatable. Some of them could be things that we did in the past or still
doing in the present. With this combine learning goals and community service in
ways that can enhance both student growth and the common good. For the Filipino
citizenship, it makes me feel that I belong to my country and I am proud for the
values that we practice and promote, and I believe that a true SPCian is an authentic
Filipino.
As far as we know, National Training Service Program is a subject mandated by
the law. For what it’s worth, I think this subject will remain mandated for as long as it
serves its purpose, the lessons that it teaches to students and all the activities
promoting benefits will greatly help an individual build his character and perspective
on a lot of things. This subject taught us a lot of things and made us realize that the
greatness in humanity is not in being human, but in being humane. Such a shame
that we didn’t experience the program on face-to-face classes, it would’ve been more
interesting to interact with the people in the community and to apply the things we’ve
learned in the discussion.
