ABSTRACT

As in todays world, where there are energy crises and the resources are depleting at a higher
rate, there is a need of specific technology that recovers the energy, which gets usually
wasted. So, in case of automobiles one of these useful technology is the regenerative braking
system. Generally in automobiles whenever the brakes are applied the vehicle comes to a
halt and the kinetic energy gets wasted due to friction in the form of kinetic energy. Using
regenerative braking system in automobiles enables us to recover the kinetic energy of the
vehicle to some extent that is lost during the braking process. In this paper the author
discusses two methods of utilising the kinetic energy that is usually wasted by converting
it into either electrical energy or into mechanical energy. Regenerative braking system can
convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy with help of electric motor. And it can also
convert the kinetic energy into mechanical energy, which is supplied to the vehicle whenever
it is needed, with the help of a flywheel.
1 INTRODUCTION
We are slowly reaching the age of electric vehicles. The major issue behind the mass use
of electric vehicles is the battery charging time and lack of charging stations. So here we
pro-pose a regenerative breaking system. This system allows a vehicle to generate energy
each time brakes are applied. The stronger the brakes, the more power is generated. We
use friction lining arrangement in a brake drum. As a drum rotates the friction lining does
not tough the drum As soon as brakes are applied, the friction lining touches the drum from
inside and moves the motors connected to lining in same direction, thus generating electricity
using mo-tors as dynamo. Thus this system allows for charging car battery each time brakes
are applied, thus providing a regenerative braking system. It moves us another step ahead
towards a pollution free transportation system.

2 EMPATHY CANVAS
We made empathy canvas on our topic Regenerative Braking System. The selected users are
students, engineers, labour, automobile drivers. The stake holders of the topics are auto-
mobile industries, aviation, gym equipments, railways etc. The users in empathy canvas
had done many activities in related to gearless transmission like: pressure applied, stopping,
brak-ing, reduction of speed etc.

2
3 AEIOU FRAMEWORK
AEIOU Summary is describing all information like environment, interaction, its user, ac-
tivities and objects. Environment for gearless transmission are automobile, gym, railway,
roler coster etc. Some activities were done by the people like employs are working their
work, engineers are supervising operation etc. Users of Regenerative Braking System are
students, workers, engineers etc. Objects of Regenerative Braking System are brake drums,
DC motors, friction lining, electric generator etc.

The set of people mentioned in the ideation canvas are the drivers, workers, racers, en-
gineers, pilots etc. The activities like pressure applied, braking, stopping, energy pro-
duce, fric-tion, energy stored etc are happening on Regenerative Braking System. Differ-
ent Situa-tion/Context/Location mentioned in the ideation canvas is listed as in heavy
traffic, slippery road, to stop vehicles, to stop moving element in automobiles etc. The
Props/Tools/Objects/Equipment are mentioned in the ideation canvas are electric gener-
ators, linking mechanism, energy produced, energy stored, conservation of energy, energy
restored etc.

7 LNM MATRIX
LNM means Learning Needs Matrix. In this we wrote about the purpose and product con-
cept, tools, methods, softwares, components, materials, design specification etc.
We used softwares like Latex, Solid works, MS Office etc.
Components used are Brake Drums, Friction Lining, DC Motors etc.

8 FINAL ASSEMBLED PROJECT (NON-WORKING)
This is the rough prototype of our project Regenerative Braking System. This is a non-
working model. In this Semester we made a working prototytpe of our project Regenerative
Braking System.

8
9 FINAL ASSEMBLED PROJECT (WORKING)
This is the working model of Regenerative Braking Sytem. It is consist of a 12V battery, a
DC motor, rotating wheel, dynamo, hand brake pedal and LED. Due to engagement between
dynamo and rotating wheel the dynamo will produce electricity which is used to glow the
LED. In this way if we use this phenomenon in vehicles then we can store this energy and
can use whenever required or to charge the battery.
